"Fregate Marseille" often mistaken for "No Quarter"
« on: March 28, 2011, 08:04:42 AM »

Well 3 weeks and out of the shipyard she goes. (huge sigh of relief.)
Three more ships before May 13th and I may actually get this convention game running.
Like always more pictures are here:

The "rattlin's" or rope ladders have steel wire for lateral supports. I put small disk magnets on the rigging climbing figures made by Old Glory to allow for casualty removal from the crew.

Totally fabulous modelling, Wingnut!  Among the best finished ship models for wargaming that I've ever seen, here or on other forums.

Not sure if you are on the PirateWargames Yahoo Group (haven't been on that one in a few years myself), but there is a guy in Nashville with some ships of similar quality, although he hired someone to build them for him. Perhaps you should meet at Memphis for some sort of large pirate fight.
Sailors have more fun!

Thank you for your complements. I try to play to my audience and as long as you guys like the ships I will keep building.
I met a gentleman named David Raybin at the last Nash-Con who ran a large Pirate game. Beautiful models all came from a company that specializes in display ships. I inquired about his sources and he sent me a link with the caveat to specifically order a water line model at purchase. The company is here: http://www.modelshipmaster.com/
The large ships run about $900 U.S. per vessel. Well worth it if your money is inversely proportionate to your spare time. David is a Lawyer and he has a larger budget than my humble University salary. I'm averaging about 4 large ships at that price and about a month of spare time per model.
David's game for Nash-Con is here:
http://hmgs-midsouth.org/tag/pirates/
David is the guy in the top center above the crowd. I was lucky enough to command the Adventure Galley in the game pictured. I loaned the game 4 of my early models to permit more players to join. Great game, fine gamer to host so many rowdy buccaneers. I'm down front center, silly hat, guy with parrot behind me. I hope to continue providing a fine game for the attendees of Boarder Wars in Kansas City very soon.

A wonderful piece of work, but, and that may be the non-native speaker talking, did you run out of puns for the name? I cannot for the hell of it figure out where the pun is in this one.

Yes, David Raybin, that's the guy!  Seems like collectively you guys are on the way to being able to match the great Bordeux game.

Chris,
The pun was more of a joke on the pronunciation of "Fre'gate Marsceille" in a bad Hollywood French accent sounding similar to "Forget Mercy" in English. It's weaker than some of the bawdier stuff I have done but I like the fact that it plays to both languages. Sort of like "Rood Dijk" working out in both Dutch and English. Not my more pungent humor..

Warrenbruhn,
I was very inspired by both Raybin and the Pirates of Bordeaux game. I've got flags, doubloons, maps, towns, 28ft X 8ft of table, props, and a really big hat...... I'm not able to fill an indoor tennis court yet but I'm working up to it. I think that the huge game in France was a collective effort on the participants part, if enough of us planned out a game in the States and Canada it would be a grand event. In the meantime if I just get the game in Kansas operational I will be happy.

"Rood Dijk" I found inspired, and I had considered "Forget Mercy" but couldn't force myself to violate the French language enough to make it sound like that... lol  As far as "pun"ishable offences go, this one is a ripe candidate for keelhauling, matey. ;)

But to get back to topic, it is indeed a marvellous piece of work. All the lovely detail aside, I am particularly taken with how well the various colours work together and how "French" it looks (blue and gold decoration, white flag and all that ;)).
