Infantry rules wise in VSF
« on: 07 May 2011, 02:52:31 PM »
Hello!

Just a quick question: In your VSF games do you think that infantry should behave like 1850's firing line style infantry or WW1 style squads?

Well, since I know infantry tactics up through 1865 and then have a knowledge gap up till 1965, I tend to use ACW tactics with modern machine-gnu doctrine.

It does rather depend on when you're setting your game, and what level of technology you've got. I jst tend to stick with the 'real world' tactics of the 1870-90s, so somewhere in between your two suggestions.
I told you so. You damned fools.

Infantry should behave in the proper manner. Bright colour uniforms so that you can be seen properly by you opponent. None of this hiding in the bushes, like the scurvy natives.
As for tactics a nice straight line allows every man to be properly seen and see and allows for maximum fire power. This also stops any craven sorts from hiding at the back.
Straight lines also show the proper discipline and are also known to confuse the natives who are likely to move in a large unruly mob and have never seen a straight edge or a pace stick in thier lives.

By all means, your earthmen soldiers should be ready to stand & fight like the civilized men they are. Their superior Courage(ie fire power) is more than a match for any native rabbel they may encounter.  >:(

I believe that machine-gnus would qualify as cavalry, not infantry, so I don't see how that applies here.

Still there are some coves such as, you know, Johnny Foreigner with his funny gun that seems almost cunning in his own way, quite clever really at bagging Tigers and Cytherian Landsharks and whatnot, they're awefully useful when it comes to doing the kind of things civilised European chaps with beards wouldn't do, what?

So, in short, some firing lines in bright jackets, and some jaeger-y Ranger-y hunter-y types who can be a bit skirmish-y (in green jackets or whatever).

My feeling is that you can easily adapt ACW infantry and cavalry rules to VSF; as ACW rules almost always contain "rifles", "gatling guns", multi-caliber artillery pieces and even lances.

They normally don't cover electric guns, automatons, Martians or 'nefs though...  ;)

There's a VSF 1pg supplement for FUBAR, and I can attest as author and primary player that it works quite well for automata, weird guns, 'nefs, etc.  Craig, the FUBAR maintainer, is also writing a Colonials supplement.
