SoBH warband - 15mm figures
« on: 05 June 2011, 06:14:26 PM »
Hi,

I have been buying tons of lead through my life but I have never really painted my miniatures... in fact I think that I've painted under ten miniatures  ::)

Well recently I got the idea to start playing SoBH with an ancient theme with mythological beasts / monsters and spiced up with some plain old basic fantasy monsters. For the warband I  ordered figs from xyston miniatures since they were exactly what I was looking for and high quality sculpts. So now I've started painting and just finished the second one. Scale is 15mm.

The pictures show up too dark so all the highlights are not showing as they should but you get the general idea. What comes to the bases I went for the forest look. Also I have not varnished them yet so they are a bit too shiny :). To be honest... I am afraid that varnishing will ruin them :/ So any tips how to varnish these little men are also welcome.

Sorry about the bad pics.. I try to get better ones when I get more painted up. Comments welcome. And... no I haven't painted the shield pics...they are decals  lol

Alot more waiting...

cheers

Mika

I must say it's a rather impressive start seeing these 15 mm guys. Not bad at all. I never had the nerve for that size. So there's not much I can tell you. I'd be happy to get the paint where it's supposed to be.

hehe thank you all for the comments.

Yes.. getting the paint where it should go is what I try to do. My major problem is highlighting / layering since I cant blend...
I think I have figured out a few things while painting and hope the next painted figures will get me to the right direction :)

15mm is also pretty forgiving scale imo... One thing bothering with these figs. are that I can't really paint decent bronze :(

I don't know about 'shortly' but I think it is marked as 'in playtesting', and due this year - so it must be close (at least in gaming terms)  lol

Im actually waiting for it to rekindle my enthusiasm for painting some Caesarean Romans who's been sitting primed for a couple of years - and then maybe some Greek myth!

Well I'll surely be following the release process. Untill then I will use the SoBH other rules. Ancient Mythology fly has bitten me hard I'm afraid  ;D

that reminds me... off to paint more figures...and rebase some skellies

And thank you all for kind comments! Most motivating :)

My project is going forward a bit too slow but I managed to paint up three more figures.

The camera is merciless and I noticed a few spots of paint in wrong places etc... >:(. Need to fix those.

looks a bit messy but in real life it's not ! :)

Shield needed still for this one

This has been shown already. I personally like this one

One of the leaders. I painted this today. Still needs a shield

also an older one

ready to face the enemy

death from above!

Im quite "new" to painting and am learning all the time so tips are more than welcome.

Great stuff! I'm making my first venture in 15mm too, Arthurians from Splintered Light. The only one I painted before was one of these Xyston Greeks. Great minis, and very nice painting!

Thank you for the comments :)

15mm is now my preferred scale. Much easier to take along and set up for fast skirmish sessions. Also the quality of the castings is getting better (just look at the copplestone minis..) so no reason to get back to 28mm.
