Nice looking shanties!
How do they sit next to your existing shacks?

I like the look of those containers. Any chance of more real estate from the game? (Like those prefab huts in Fyrestone, where you first meet the Doc)

The new ones are slightly smaller, but only a few millimeters. In one of the pictures, you can one of the old ones in a corner.

If I manage to make more architecture, it'll be more along the lines of the small outposts that are littered all around, i. e. small rectangular buildings. Probably not even full buildings, but a few things like doors, aircon intakes and a few other things to decorate foamboard buildings with. But I'll finish the shanties first.

... and here is the test piece for the rock formations:

They are made from polystyrene, cut into rock shapes, then covered with white glue and very fine sand. Experimental painting was done with an airbrush, although it could use a few washes.

At the moment, it looks a bit too much like the standard polystyrene rocks, and not really like in the game. Any ideas how to make it more comic-like?

How about really dark lines between the joins in the separate boulders? (never seen the game so I'm guessing  :) )

cheers

I agree, the recesses could use some darkening. Fairly harsh perhaps, maybe even going to near black...

There's a pic on the borderlands game forums in this post that may be useful as a reference?
You could even try to paint on some of the comic-book style lines and shading the rocks have in-game. But I'm not sure if this wouldn't clash too much with your other terrain and mini's.

Could glue on small rock slide rubble to the bottom edges?

This project is looking great.

... but going rather painfully slow at the moment. I'm still struggling with the rocks, but have settled for a mixture of styrofoam rocks covered with paper napkins and very fine sand. Large cracks will be cut into the styrofoam, smaller ones will be painted on. I think the main problem is that the comic style of the game is essentially a 2D medium which is hardly translatable into 3D - in comics, all surfaces are enclosed by black lines, whereas in a terrain piece, you'd need to highlight most of the edges. Hmmmm....

Still going slow... but some progress has been made. Many more shanties have been painted, a few of which I mocked up on the unflocked and unpainted board, just to get a feeling for the dimensions. There will be a similar cliff on the third board, so together, they will form a canyon (rocks for the cliff need to be shaped, of course):

Also, a lot of scrap piles have been painted. Beneath them, you can see a cast of the 3D container I had printed out. It turned out ok, but not as ok as I'd liked, so it won't be available on Pardulon. I'll use a few casts for the board, though.

I finally came to terms with the shape of the rocks (the cliff/canyon will be done in the same fashion). The concrete building will probably be replaced with something more futuristic-looking, as will the wooden fences. We'll see :)
