1st Corps Cape Wars and Mutineer Miniatures scale?
« on: June 12, 2011, 12:42:02 PM »
Hello all,
Does anyone know how the 1st Corps Cape war figures scale up next to Mutineer Miniatures Indian Mutiny range? I've got my eye on the Mutineer stuff as the range expands and I was also fancying the 1st Corp figures as they have bags of character but I would be wanting to fill out the Cape Wars range with Mutineer Naval ratings etc.

Thanks in advance
"Morning!"

I have some of both. Off the top of my head I'm not too sure, but in my mind I remember 1st Corps being quite small and Mutineer quite big.

But my memory may be playing me false so give me a bit of time and I'll rustle up a comparison picture for you.

That would be greatly appreciated. Looking at the 1st Corp stuff I always imagined them to be quite big and chunky I'm surprised they are small.

I have them in front of me, no camera though unfortunately. The Mutineer are higher some 3 mm and somewhat "bigger". Since both are of the similar chunky style I do not mind though. I use them together, adding both Foundry and Perry. These are surely some of the best 1st Corps sculpts and lack some of the unproportionate features of their ACW range.

Yes, their style is somewhat chunky, which when looking at the pics on their site makes you assume they are big. But in fact they are quite small.

I'm afraid I don't have any 1st Corps British regulars to give you an exact like-for-like comparison (my game is set in the Sixth War rather than the Eighth, so I went with Perry Carlist War figures), but I hope this will help.

Bare Metal

1st Corps Boers and Mutineer British command.

And with some paint on

1st Corps Xhosa and Mutineer British command.

It may not be immediately noticeable, but the Xhosa have had their bases built up a little, to help disguise any height difference (as I want to mix them with some other manufacturers in my games).

Hope that helps a bit.

That is great! Thanks guys that answers my question perfectly.Much appreciated. That is quite a significant size difference. The 1st Corps Boer looks better than he does on the website. I think I'll end up with both ranges but keep them seperate.

Thanks again.

Some of the Boers are better sculpts than others. Some, like these two, are quite nice. Others aren't so appealing. The Xhosa are the same mix of good and not-so-good. Makes me think the whole range may be something of a Curate's Egg.

Just got a reply back from 1st Corps who say that Dragoons,Lancers and Artillery are on the cards at some point but no set date yet.

Incidentally, looking at the size of the Mutineer stuff makes me think that they will probably be compatible with Great War's Crimea range. I understand that Great War figures are big.

So does anyone have the Empress Minis Boers, and how these compare size-wise and proportion-wise to these other two ranges????

Not too bad a match with 1st Corps, size-wise, I guess. The only thing that would make them incompatible is the thirty year gap in weaponry and fashion.

There's another surprise for me then. I always thought the Empress stuff would be big.

This could mean mixing Empress Maori wars Brits comfortably with 1st Corp Cape Brits. I didn't expect that. Historically they are a few years apart, is there much difference in kit?

I'm getting seriously intersted in the mid 19th century colonial wars, especially since Mutineer is spreading to the orient.

Ahh good times.

To complicate things further, donīt forget Perry Carlist Brits, they could do service in the  Cape Wars  ;)
