Hex!

 lol lol
Lets not open THAT can of worms, although I have to say that I really like hex bases for board game figures.
Must be the old adverts for Talisman when I was a youngster.

Paul, I've been looking at round bases for my fantasy figures too, but I think it will be too much work now, although I think round ones do look better for skirmish now

I don't think it would too much of a stretch in my case, mate.
One faction or warband at a time and I have already done two so I have an incentive to carry on now.
And there is absolutely no rush, so no need to panic at all.
 :D

Late to the shouting party but round ones get my vote as well.

Of course I expect to see all the old minis and the new ones pictured here within with their round bases :)

If you have squre get the 90s grey ones that came with the fighters

My warbands each have the same base type but different types for different warbands

gosh - a threadomancy warning ...  :o  have to say I don't really understand the problem with resurrecting threads, so hopefully ok ...

if anyone familiar with playing Mordheim could comment, I'm going to be doing some warbands and was wondering about base-size - I see the comments above are over-whelmingly postive about round bases.

googling led me to this:

https://silo41.co.uk/2018/04/16/mordheim-building-a-warband-in-a-round-base-world/

he's pretty opinionated with ref. specifically to Mordheim - although in the mind's eye I don't like the main reason (one figure being abutted by 8 others sounds a bit silly to me tbh) ...

I was wanting to go with 30mm round lipped bases for aesthetic reasons really. Is there really a game-play reason why this is a bad idea, to the point it would spoil things?

* btw- if it does seem poor form to post here - someone let me know, and I'll start a new thread.

This thread is pure gold. It's always a good time to revisit it to plunder the rich veins of useful ideas and eye-candy.

We like round bases - the smaller the better - so our minis can make best use of the terrain. Our preference is to use nickels, 5¢ pieces, as a base. They have a bit of weight to them and work for most figures.

Television is rather a frightening business. But I get all the relaxation I want from my collection of model soldiers. P. Cushing

ok, cheers mr. peabody - so round, but as small as poss'. ...  interesting.

I was quite keen on using 30mm, as I've had a bit of a reaction to the clear acrylic jobs ('faces and bases' and all that...), and fancied doing more landscaped ones for my Mordheim 'bands.
also, I like the rolled lip bases - really set such work off ...

but it sounds as tho' from a gameplay perspective, the bases should tend towards the small ... whether round or square?

I think here you are trying to balance a few factors, and as such there is no 'right' answer, just an answer that fits best with what you are trying to achieve.

Generally smaller bases are better in game, as they allow figures to fit better within terrain. But smaller bases give less space for landscaping, and looking good.

Clear acrylic bases allow figures to blend to different terrain much better. If you go with solid bases then at some point the terrain won't match with the base. In a skirmish game this is more likely than in mass battle games, as the terrain can vary a lot more.

Using the base as a display item, vs blending to the terrain. Personally I really dislike the big black edge to GW style bases, but I do get the idea that it helps set the figure off from the terrain. But I'd rather the bases of the figures blend to the terrain, but this is all about which style works for you.

thanks Fred.

I've done acrylic bases for my ghost archipelago figures, and I agree with you in terms of their 'disappearing' (relatively) and blending in etc.

think it's because I've so seen so many excellent warbands googling, with traditional basing ... got a yen to go that way.
but think you're right - I may well regret that down the line.

But more than the aesthetic aspect, I guess I remain concerned by what the guy I link to in my  first post above [post #1523] asserts - that the small square bases are actually an important aspect of balancing the game, and enabling a density of 'melee' that is essential ...
