Help from Dark Age punsters wanted
« on: July 13, 2011, 12:03:46 PM »
I am about to start a very light hearted Dark Age campaign.

It's inspired by Oliver Postgate's animated seriers "Noggin the Nog".  from the 1960's. Anyway I have decided the main factions will be headed by the saxon nobleman Earl Beerfroth, and he will be fighting his renegade younger brother, Egnogg, who will be supported by hired vikings.

I am now looking for other character names to' fleshout' the campaign. They can be vikings, saxons, monks, villagers etc. the only criterion is to be amusing and sound vaguely credible.

Suggestions?

Eystein Foul-Fart was mentioned in the icelandic saga's; and using the 'quick guide to norse names' in the back of Battletroll I managed to get Grim Glumsson & Odd the strange (Grim, Glum and Odd all being norse first names)

My brother's been researching our family tree for a while now and apparently we may have a 'the Strange' deep within the roots of the Scandinavian links.  That would help to explain some of my family!

I always thought Ivar the Boneless sounds quite funny.

How soon do you need these?

I started a LotR spoof years (possibly decades) ago. All I can remember of hand is a character called Egburger the Cheesy. If I can find my list of characters I'll post up any others that may be of use.

Eroic Deeds? Or his dodgy brother Erotic Deeds?

Not exactly a pun but Ivar the Boneless is a clear favourite of mine.

Of no use to you at all but I have some part finished sculpts of Noggin & Nogbad I started a couple of years ago - must get around to finishing them.

There is a Noggin picture on the wall of my painting room signed by Firmin and Postgate too

I realise that this is threadomancy almost from the dawn of time, but I was tidying up a box of stuff from the loft the other day and came across two sheets of paper scrawled in pencil, looking as if I'd written them in approximately 1983. One is a list of names, the other some dialogue. Some characters appear on both pages, others only on one. It represents something like my 13-year-old interpretation of 'Lord of the Rings' as done by The Goon Show. I think, probably, The Black Adder (the first series) was also an influence - the scene where the messenger has to give Brian Blessed 'some other news' comes to mind. There should have been a third page (at least), but didn't find it.

I will put all of it up verbatim:

(P1)

Jojoba the Nut
Vosine the Green

Men, of sorts:
Aragon the Arogant (sic.)
Borrowmore Blood-Bather the Lender
Furrowmore the Farmer
Therethen, King of the Roehirim
Eowig
Eowax
Denethin, Steward of Gobbor
Grimmer Worm-face

Ents:
Firface
Hickoryhead
Speadyspruce
Mahoganymush

Goblins:
Gobbscum Muckeater
Zittygob Gawkpluke
Scungescum Wartface
Grabbersnatch Ratscab

(P2)

Eowig: Sire, all the chickens are down with anthrax!
Therethen: But we don’t have any chickens.
Eowig: Sire, all the Dwarvish cavalry are down with chicken pox!
Therethen: Oh no! Only one thing can save us now: a friendly passing wizard to cure all of our Dwarvish cavalry and help us fight against… against… who are we fighting against, Eowig?
Eowig: Garibaldi the Red, sire.
Therethen: Yes, a friendly passing wizard to cure all of our Dwarvish cavalry and help us fight against… Garibaldi the Red!
(Parkin the Ginger enters)
Parkin: Hi! I’m just a friendly passing wizard, come to cure all of your Dwarvish cavalry and help you fight against Garabaldi the Red! Can I be of service?
Therethen: Not really. But since you’re here you may as well stay for dinner. An extra place for dinner, Chives. Oh, by the way, what is for dinner?
Chives: Chicken, sire.
Therethen: Aaaaaarrrrghhh!
(Splat)
Therethen: That last step’s a killer!

Therethen: Eowig, have we mustered?
Eowig: Yes sire, we have enough mustard for the entire campaign.
Therethen: Aaaaaarrrrghhh!

So... in my defence, I'd like to remind the court I was 13.

Therethen, Eowig, Eowax, and Grimmer Worm-face seem to be the sum total of Anglo-Saxon-y names involved in the process (I can only assume Egburger the Cheesy, conceived as one of the Marshalls of Rohan, was on the missing sheet).

And sorry it's taken 5 years to reply to this! Is your campaign still going?
