The Devil's Wind ~ an update
« on: July 21, 2011, 05:37:23 PM »
Just to let any interested parties know that I have collected my latest ruleset, The Devil's Wind, from the printer's today and that they will be going out to distributors next week. I imagine that you will be able to order them next week from Caliver and Northstar and buy them directly at Claymore from Mutineer, Caliver and Dave Thomas.
If you like them, then do tell others please. It will make a poor pensioner really happy... :D

David

PS My next venture will probably be a set for large skirmishes set in the French and Indian War, but not before 2012 I'm afraid, lots of 'real life' in the way.

Do you need any guinea pigs playtesters for the next set?

I'll be staying in Falkirk and driving over on Saturday morning. I'm travelling up on Thursday and back on Sunday. Does that help?

First I have to declare an interest, I have played with these rules at Dave's house, proofread them a few times and appear, fleetingly, as the Nabob of Nham.  When I played them I was impressed so much by their speed and playability that I bought two armies, currently on my painting table.  So, that stated, what do you get:

Well, for those who have his previous rules, these are much slicker and professional in appearance, full colour throughout, including the cover, with dozens of photos of Dave's figures.  The rules are easy to pick up and contain a variant for the Mutineers to be auto-generated, as well as a whole host of individual characters, with their own influences on the game.  As I said earlier, games play very quickly and, I found, errors in tactics get punished quite messily.

A much underplayed section of military history, Dave's figures are largely the 28mm Foundry range, although Mutineer, obviously, has a growing collection.  I used the Dixons 15mm range, with some of the figures from the same sculptor's, Tim Hallam, Wellesley in India range (any chance of seeing these in production, Trevor?) and filled the gaps with items from QRF's Freikorps India range.  Irregular have just started a 15mm IM range, but I think the Dixons range has a lot of character.

Available from all the usual suspects.

I'm glad your copy arrived safely John. Thanks for those kind words, although you forgot to mention that its was my tactics that got punished in our game.... :'(

So, gents, just how large a game can this set of rules handle?  I've already got my collection built and partly painted and it has twelve man infantry units and six man mounted units - for the British side.  There is more variety on the "other" sides - mutineers, badmahses, armies of nabobs and rhani, moghul's forces (not entirely historical set-up)  Oh, and mine is all in 15 mm as well.

Thanks.

I hope these two pictures of a game here in GHQ will answer your question. The table is 7' x 4' and the figures are mostly Foundry's Indian Mutiny range with Mutineer artillery and buildings. Scale is not an issue, bases are the thing really for calculating everything. My units are 6-9 cavalry and 16-24 infantry, but in bases its 2 or 3 cavalry, four to six infantry.

The game I played had around 10 infantry, 3 cavalry and 3 guns a side, coped easily, so could be bigger.  I based my units in a similar vein to Dave's, Infantry at 20 ( although my badmash will be bigger) and cavalry at 9.  He also has a convention that units are withdrawn when they are destroyed, and not piecemeal, a small dice note dthe casualties, this means that your nicely painted troops stay on for longer.  Cheaper to do in 15mm is the option for an artillery piece to have limbers and a separate battery commander, these take casualties before the gun, obvious if you've read a few real battery reports, the limber and caisson are huge targets compared to the gun itself.

What figures are you using?

You won't be disappointed, his best book yet, but then I am biased.
