Well, to use them you have to stay in the same room. The smell is quite intense. I find tasting paint much more disturbing.

The first batch I got (the complete set of eight) smelled like paint, not 'rotten'. I still have the blue, the purple and even the sepia from that set. My green is almost gone, I already got a new pot which smells awful.

And I too have the impression that Devlun Mud smells especially bad.

Having just had a whiff of the two GW washes I own (Devlan Mud which I bought just after they came out; Gryphonne Sepia bought just a couple of months ago) they both smell like... paint. Which is to say, slightly of solvent, slightly of pigment, nothing objectionable or foul.

On the other paw, I used to paint exclusively with Humbrol enamals, so perhaps years of exposure to thinners has changed my nose?  ;)

You guys are the kind of Germans who come to the US, drink Budweiser (American, not Czech), and pronounce it as good beer, huh?

You know, I had a jar of Devlan Mud and it didn't smell at first, but it did pretty shortly afterwards.

Maybe something in that particular colour reacts poorly with air?

My washes smell as well. In addition it seems, that it gets worse while emptying them. So maybe it is either the factor of concentrating the "smelly part" or the point mentioned above.

Actually sometimes I got the impression, that even when dry on the miniature they still smell a bit °_O

It's a well known problem. From what I gathered from various discussions, jars from France usually smell like hell, such from China are fine. Just look at the label. Don't know what's the good sign here, however. :?

The funny thing is that mine seems to smell like a Teriyaki dinner that's been left out and gone bad.  o_o

If they have a particularly bad smell to them, take them to your local GW or phone your GW customer services. Some batches of the stuff has been faulty, not that it will damage the miniatures but it can be quite unpleasant to work with (not dangerous). It's down to the sulphur that is actually part of the mixup for Devlan Mud and Badab Black, possibly a couple of others.  ;)

It must be the lead neutralising the smell!  :D

Just thought of something, how many of you shake the pots before using them? It might be that the smelly stuff settles and when you have used all the non-smelly stuff, all it does is STINK rather than whiff.  ;D

Agreed, smells like something you might find in a nappie

No having twins I can confirm that it does not smell like anything you find in nappy! ;)

They do smell a bit off though I must agree, (the washes not the nappies...)
