Two Iroquois Longhouses
« on: July 30, 2011, 09:12:20 PM »
Hi,

Just finished up two 28mm Iroquois Longhouses from Acheson Creations.  I decided to set up a little mini-diorama of an Indian village to photograph them.  I got out my palisades and campfires (also from Acheson Creations) and peopled it with some of my 28mm Conquest Miniatures.  Turned out fairly inspiring looking.

It gets me pumped up for the game I'm going to run at the upcoming Advance the Colors convention in Springfield, OH, Sept. 16-18.

Here are 3 photos of my longhouses.

I appreciate it!  Next up are some miscellaneous terrain bits to have around the village.  I'm thinking scalp poles, looms for weaving, frames for stretching animal skins and racks for smoking fish/meat.  Looks like it will all be scratch built.  So, the time of the easy, Acheson-aided terrain is past...now I have to get creative!

Here's a piece of line art that I may use for ideas...

They look good Mike.

I know that piece of art - I’ve used it as inspiration myself quite a lot over the years. I believe that’s from Sketchbook '56 - Volume 6, Indian Allies of the French War Era, 1756-1761, by Ted Spring. An excellent book if you can find it.

I believe Herb Gundt has also used it. He wrote an article on building an Indian village which included the items you’ve mention and also makes reference to the book. The article was published in Wargames Illustrated 145 (October 1999).

Cheers,

Barry

You are correct, sir!  I should probably have identified it.  I know I mention it somewhere on my website, but didn't here.  Thanks for the citation!

Nice village there Mike! The smudging around the roof vents is a nice touch.

Thanks, Aaron. The models actually have a slit in them for the smoke.  So, here's my latest thought.  If it is not too expensive, I may buy some dry ice for the convention game.  I'll put little cups of water inside each longhouse.  I'll drop a chip of dry ice in the cup and voila!  Smoke rising up through the vent holes!

I've seen other games at conventions do this.  Anybody know how much dry ice costs, or how long a piece lasts in water before it melts completely?
