What to use to glue window 'glass' in place?
« on: 01 August 2011, 04:16:17 PM »
As my revised barn takes shape one of the next steps is adding glazing to the windows. I intend to use the clear plastic from blister packs but not sure what the best glue to use is? PVA?

Cheers,

Graham W

PVA usually does the trick, especially if you have some "grooves" or similar to slot the panes into. Some "general purpose" glues like UHU (standard yellow tube) work as well. Just steer clear of CA glues, as they tend to fog up any clear plastic, especially if not properly ventilated during curing. A year ago, I actually bought a specific canopy glue, but that one doesn't really have that much benefit - just use PVA sparingly and make sure you can fix the parts in place properly.

I use canopy glue because it's designed not to mist but sticks quickly.
I got mine from Antenociti but I'm sure it's available from other places.

I bought mine at the local Modelzone, and my main gripe is that it takes ages (up to 24h) to dry properly and even then isn't that much stronger than PVA - I suspect it is formulated for "proper modelling", and not for stuff that is supposed to be handled.

Thanks for the replies, I will do a test run with the PVA on some windows I will not be using and see how it holds up.

Cheers,

Testors makes it here in the states.  Just go to any model shop.  It needs to be agitated well so shake the hell out of it before use.

First try with PVA did not withstand the first 'poke'. This Testors glue was recommended as well by someelse on another forum so will have a look for that.

There's a product called Gator's Grip Hobby Glue that might work.  It's basically an acrylic CA type of glue.  It's strong enough to glue and hold photoetch yet it retains a bit of flexibility.  Apparently one of its tests involved gluing a piece of PE railing vertically to a plastic surface.  After drying overnight, it was able to be folded flat and it popped back to vertical! It's repositionable while working with it, cleans up with water, dries clear and is apparently sandable, too.  You can check it out here.  There's a link on the site to a comprehensive review as well.

We sell the Testors Canopy glue in our store and I have found it very good. The only drawback is that it does shrink ALOT so it is not the best for filling in holes and gaps.

After a couple of experiments I am going to use Bostick superglue gel that comes in the silver and blue squeeze bottle. I tried it at the weekend and no discolouring, crazing. 1 drop in each corner of the window frame and then add the "glass".

Thanks for all the replies.
