I Wanna Rock!

A bunch, actually, so I made some! I got the idea from this thread:
frocks
I modified it slightly by using vinyl spackle (its more flexible) and adding PVA to the mix. To paint them I experimented with paints while they were wet, and woodland scenics earth tones when they were dry. for a bit more durability, they were sealed with a water based matte varnish afterward.




Of course, I also had to experiment with other ways to change or improve this idea, because thats what I do


This is the above technique, just with heavy amounts of wall spackle in places. Works well, just not as durable.

This one was coated in cheap white paintable caulk. Two coats, Mcfly.
 
The result? A super flexible rock that can be literally thrown against the wall without damage.
The only downside is that caulk and the scenics pigments diddnt hit it off together; I had to use paint and drybrushing to get it even remotely looking like a rock.

YPU, I couldn't find anything specific, i found it called pliester -a generic plaster term im guessing. Its called joint compoint, drywall compound, spackle, and drywall mud here in the states. hope this helps you.

From the description I'm guessing we call it "mastiek" here in Belgium. And that's actualy just silicone sealant (the stuff in tubes you use to seal a window or a sink)

Well, they don't look real-real... but they do look more or less solid (plaster or some kind of polystyrene). When you squeezed it with your finger, my brain made a funny sound!

But - maybe I missed something - how did You make these crackles in the stone? Just with e the paint or are these cracks between parts of foam?

The 'Frocks' thread mentions 'top coat'. I couldn't find that here in Britain so I tried 'finishing skim'. It's just like plaster but very slightly more flexible. It would make your rocks as solid as a.......um......rock!

You can also rip up your foam into big chunks before you plaster it to get more of a textured feel. I tried on my skull island hideout for my pirate crew.....

Hm, interesting, see I would have guessed stuff like "allabastine muurvuller" but I guess a more flexible material is what I am looking for, actually I have some muurvuller lying around, I'll see if that works at all.

Mastiek however is a pain to work with, I prefer the cheap silicone material tubes for flexible roads.

Belgian, could you name a brand/type ? The idea of making my own flexible roads has been playing in my head for quite a while now.

My first roads were made by using "acrylaatkit" by topcraft some sort of cheap homebrand of Aldi if I recall correctly, they carry it know and than together with cheap PVA glue.

So, this technique could also be used for stones and rocks to be actually thrown at people (as in LARP)? I've been pondering about how to make cheap ones instead of the expensive stuff you can buy in stores... which is also covered in latex, not good for people with allergy...
