Reenactment: the Battle of Mästerby, the Battle of Visby
« on: August 12, 2011, 07:30:39 PM »
Not EXACTLY wargames related but close enough: 650 years ago these battles were fought around my neck of the woods and it is being remembered by quite  ambitious re-enactments. I saw the battle of Mästerby yesterday and as I am sure some of you agree, these things can be quite  inspirational, a couple of hundred knights and men-at-arms duking it out in full, proper get up. Poles, Germans, Italians, Scots, Norwegians, Finlanders as well as our own lads were taking part in the re-enactment which has been going on during the whole week (Visby Medieval Festival).

Very cool photos!

(the only reenactment I was going to be able to take part in this year has been scuppered by my brother's Big Day - selfish git!)

Quite authentic, I believe, especially among archers.

Even with full mail and a kettle hat  lol

We have several in our ECW pike block which certainly isn't authentic  lol

Definately gives the opposition pause for thought when we stick them all in the front rank  :D

cheers

Sonny, which is Galland to you folks, claims that within Landsknecht regiments women fighting among the men were more usual than you'd think. Sort of stands to reason that women, esp. when the need has been dire, in all times have been filling the ranks.

And if the link to my Facebook album works properly... Here are my pictures from the main battle outside the walls of Visby:

The battle at Mästerby was reenacted on August 11th, and the battle of Visby on the 13th.

Those pics are bloody lovely, Olle! Captures the zeitgeist of it all in a wonderful way. I get quite riled up when I see the images of those fucking Holstein mercenaries in Danish pay, tramping the soil of my beloved island.  ;)
