Weird War Soviet, a start
« on: 24 August 2011, 08:03:58 PM »
I decided to post up the start of my Soviet force, mainly for Secrets of the Third Reich. I needed a new project after I finished my British force for SoTR and with the re-release of Warlord's Soviet range it was decided. Mother Russia was calling.

And with some suitable theme music

here are the photos:

Not so much weird elements yet but more is on it's way.

You do not consider those MaKs weird?  :o

Battlesuits for WWII is very much the technical aspect of Weird War, if you ask me  :)

Interesting bases! The poppys made me think 'is that photoshopped blood splatter?' for a moment, then i realized the abundance of flowers  lol
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

@Argonor
No I agree with you, the MaK's are definitely weird but I hope to find weirder things to include.

@Dr.Falkenhayn
Thank you!

I'm having a hard time finding suitable weird units that would fit in with the Soviet's. Anyone got any ideas? The only thing I can come up with is monkeys for some reason.

Great project - one I'll get around to completing eventually (I'm about 20 Westwind Erman zombies into it).

Definitely monkeys. More like Enhanced Gorillas. PPP Kardans(sp?) from whatstheirname should fit the bill. Maybe some Yeti like creature would be more appropriate.

Also, if your Weird War tastes lean towards the mystic, you could use a small albino girl in lace dress psychic. Think "BPRD 1946":

"And Lo, thou shalt close your legs in a snapping action whence your miniature slips from your hand when you are painting. And the paint will be fresh, and your trousers will be soiled, but you will smile - because the mini was saved"

Rackham AT43?  :) I may be quite off target here, but they came to mind.

@Torradas
I've been looking at some of the AT-43 Karmans to use as Gorillas but they seem to be hard to find at decent prices here in Sweden, I guess I'll have to go to E-bay.

Great idea about the BPRD -46, I'm not very familiar with it but from what I got from a quick glance on Google, I like it.

I also really like the idea about using Yetis, I'll have to try to hunt down some good minis for that.

@Dr.Falken
The were-bear look good, I'll have to look into them. As for the Siberians, I'm trying to find alternatives for them. I really don't like their miniatures for them but I haven't found any good alternatives yet besides the Karmans.

Great looking platoon you have there, where is the walker you have in the background from?

Thanks for the ideas guys!

Nice start man. Looking good.

Have you played Command & Conquer Red Alert (any of them)? Some pretty cool weird stuff in those. Someone on here already has a thread about Tesla Troopers. Also Kurov Airships: Dirigible Bombers, slow and heavilly armoured. Psi-Commandos. SOmeone already mentioned Bears/werebears.

the rider may be a bit out of place but the mount would fit really well.

Rider's torto is attached at the waist, and it is possible to buy the bear without the torso - so any torso could be attached instead.

Finally some of my reinforcements has arrived. A nice 1/48 KV-2. First scale model in 20 odd years and first time I try to use pigment powders for real. I have no idea how you do weathering on decals so they look a bit out of place.

Karmans can be a little hard to come by, but how about the recently-recently Dust Tactics Axis Gorilla set?  They're quite weird, and there's nothing German about them at all:

Best of all, you can swap the arm weapons around easily (they pop on and off, and can be rotated as well) and are compatible with the ones on the Axis Zombies, so you can get quite a few unique mixes of fist or mace arms if you buy both boxes.  At $15 a box, these guys are some of the best things to come out of Dust Tactics.
