This is a project I've had in my head since 2008 but is only now hitting the bench. I'm really thankful that Fireforge came along and allowed me to work primarily in plastic. The vision is a dozen 'fantasy SS' for WWWII that are part knight and part modern weapons.  Any suggestions, tips, or feedback will be most welcome. Things may move a bit slow as my work schedule is demanding. These are the initial and very rough starts. The idea is that I'll use green stuff to dress out the arms as mail. I'm very new to green stuff and I'm worried the arms may be too thick. So I'll be starting slow and as I've plenty of arms and weapons for do-overs.

When paint time comes I'll be looking for some suggestions. And of course I'll be quite careful re: forbidden images.

I guess you have seen this image?

Do a google image search for "fortean_times_316_5.jpg" - I won't link it, due to a big nazi symbol.

It's the cover from Fortean Times #196 (May 2005)

Have you checked out AE-WWII? They have a SS Knights set. It has 1 mounted Knight and one dismounted knight. They are equipped with a mix of plate style armor and "modern" late 1940's German military tech. They have options for swords or sturmgewehr 44. These might be exactly what you are looking for, and could act as prototype for your conversions. They can be found on ebay and many on-line gaming stores. Here's a picture of the mounted version.

I've seen the AE-WWII fig and I like it just fine. But my original inspiration was history channel clips of pre-war pageants (presumably staged by Riefensthal) which included some more "classic" Teutonic costume.

So yeah, I'm drawing on those as well as the other posted image (which I'd not seen before)but at it's heart the unit is circa 13th cent knights with STG44s, Panzerfausts, and radio saddle bags.

It'll be my first serious attempt at green stuff. No promise it will go well...

Things are going a bit slow but I do have some WIP updates. The struggle for me right now is laying mail armour over WF factory plastic arms. I'm no expert on greenstuff and the WF arms, though a fine scale for what they are, are too thick after the greenstuff goes on I think. On the MG42 gunner the left arm is mostly an armature with just the WF left hand.  In that case I think I made a mistake in building up from the armature to the mail in one go.

I'm thinking I'll start over on the arms using primarily hands and wire armatures only but building up in layers. I've got plenty of arms and plenty of weapons so it's only a loss of time. I'll call it experience. It is WIP, so the idea is (assuming I don't start over) is the right arms get the same mail armour treatment.

The sniper I'm happy with. In his case I'm just keeping the shirt sleeves rationalizing that mail sleeves hinder sharp shooting.

No pics today but I am making progress. As I mentioned I've switched to plastic hands and weapons connected to the torsos by wire armatures. The posing is going much smoother I think. I'm measuring the armatures against other plastic arms - hopefully I won't end up with a bunch of freak knights with 3m long arms ;) I've got one knight throwing a cluster charge right handed and holding his STG44 in his left hand and another shouldering a panzerschrek in progress. I plan to finalize those poses and post tomorrow night.

I've chopped the arms off the one with the helm and are re-doing them with wire armatures. May have a new pic of him as well if things go fast.

Does anyone have a picture of the AE WWII Knight dismounted? I'd like one for a project and found a place that sells him separate, but I can't find any pictures of him.

This is a photo of the green. I did a search for AE-WWII on TGN it was on the second page of the search results. I have the metal double pack, but they haven't been assembled yet. It looks like a pretty close match.

Got a few more poses done - so far any hour of work on the project has been quite productive but the number of hours is not what I'd hoped.

Throwing demo charge

Firing panzerfaust

Banner bearer

melee weapons

Firing panzerschrek
