An alternative to large matchsticks is to use wooden barbeque skewers.
I have used them for my Mordheim project to represent medieval scaffolding. As the are rounded, they look like stripped down tree trunks.
They would work well for bamboo scaffolding too.
It is not particularly clear in this picture, but that is what was used to create this scaffold;
Of course your use of squared matchsticks is more appropriate for your subject matter.
P.S. Thanks for painting up that aquarium ruin. I have one of those and had previously left it as I bought it. I thought it worked fine as-is (apart from the fact it is hollow and you can see the inside!) but, having seen yours, I think it would look better painted up in the same colour scheme as the rest of my town. Warning to others regarding this aquarium piece; It is hollow and made of plastic and needs some work, IMO, to make it usable. Nevermore has made it look much better than I first thought it could be!
