ECW discussion
« on: September 09, 2011, 08:39:19 PM »
I have recently been enamored with the English Civil Wars and have managed to recruit enough 28mm figures to have some good sized battles.

The rules I have tried so far are...
Very Civile Actions, Might of Arms (Variant), 1644, Principles of War Renaissance, Field of Glory Renaissance.

I also have Forlorn Hope but haven't actually played it yet.

Each set has its good points but my problem is that the rules I've tried so far aren't giving me that "feel" that I want for this period. So I'm looking for more rule suggestions. Or maybe some discussion about why I should re-visit one of the rule sets I already tried.

To me Forlorn Hope gives the best feel - I would suggest giving it a go

I rather like the WAB English Civil War rules, nice and simple with a bit of flavour to 'em. Don't know however if they are still available?

We quite like "Regiment of Foote" from Peter Pig.
Regardless of the battle rules they have a really good pre-battle "campaign" section that makes them worthwhile.

It's one of the few sets of rules where you can find yourself as the attacker even though you are outnumbered and have left all your artillery behind on a muddy road....

What about Basic Baroque, an Impetus off-shoot.

I was hoping for a release from TFL (TooFatLardies) as I would like to game both skirmish and regimental (my figures are based individually). Heard they might be venturing into this era.  Currently use Warhammer ECW for regimental and have Gloire if I go the skirmish route. WH is pretty good, but the organization of the rules is a puzzle - trying to find something is sometimes a chore. Would like a set of rules that can 'telescope' from skirmish to larger actions. I really like Impetus, but not too thrilled with Impetus Baroque in 28mm as still really Basic Baroque and not a fully fleshed out Impetus set. Will wait for that upgrade to decide.

TFL do have a set under development, working title of In the Buffe. Don't know how far they are from release though.

I asked this question recently on TMP:

And so did someone else (they sensibly posted on the ECW board unlike me... :( and consequentlky got more replies):

I would agree with that and have played WABECW, 1644 and Regiment of Foote also

I may have to give Forlorn Hope a shot having only played WAB/ECW and 1664
