7 Western movies I like - name yours
« on: 22 September 2011, 09:26:07 PM »
As I'm wrapping up "Old west" week on my blog I listed 7 westerns I really like (in no particular order).
Description of each movie can be read on my blog: http://anatolisgameroom.blogspot.com/2011/09/7-western-movies-i-really-like.html

Unforgiven
Tombstone
Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford
Once Upon a Time in the West
Magnificent seven
The Good, the bad, the ugly
3:10 to Yuma (2007)

I picked 7 movies since that is pretty much the number you can cram into a blog post without making it overwhelming. I did leave out a couple of others I really like. Anyways, it would be fun to check what your "top 7" movie list would look like  :)

It's a tough one to just name seven, but here goes in no particular order:

The Searchers
Rio Bravo
The Magnificent Seven
The Wild Bunch
The Professionals
Tombstone
Open Range

There are loads more I would like to add, the Dollar trilogy, Ulzanas Raid, True Grit (both version) a top ten would be easier!

The Lonesome Dove TV series was great (OK, so it's not a movie)

Little Big Man

Outlaw Josey Wales

She wore a Yellow Ribbon

Gettysburg (  ;) )

Good Bad and the Ugly

I agree with Malamute and Shaun, narrowing it down to 7 is very hard, here are some, but I'll probaly change my mind in a few minutes, so I'll try not to come back with a revised list, yet:

The Searchers
The Culpepper Cattle Company
Monte Walsh (both versions)
Ulzana's Raid
The Missing
Open Range
Appaloosa

Open Range, Outlaw Josey Wales and the Wild Bunch were my "runner ups".
Does Gettysburg actually count as a Western?  :D I like it despite the funny looking fake beards  lol

a top ten would be easier!

If the list were for seven magnificent western movies that would make it a bit easier - the Magnificent seven would be covered by the title.

There has to be at least one Wayne movie, I'd probably opt for The Searchers, although any of the Ford cavalry trilogy could be a good option.
Also The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance to get James Stewart.
Probably High Noon and My darling Clementine to bring Gary Cooper and Henry Fonda onto the list.
Possibly Dodge City to include Errol Flynn in the list.

For purely sentimental reasons I would include Stagecoach, the Wayne version, because it reminds me of my father. He saw it when it was first released whilst on shore leave. I never did find out where, but it was always one of his favourite films.

That gets me to six without even choosing something special.
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

No particular order here...

The good, the Bad and the Ugly
Few Dollars More
Quigley Down Under (set in Austrailia, but seriously, can you go farther west? :D )
True Grit (2010)
Stagecoach (1939)
Lonesome Dove
Outlaw Josey Wales

Hard to narrow it down to seven... there are so many good ones!

Hmmm... in no particular order:

- The Wild Bunch (Pekinpah!)
- The Good the Bad & the Ugly
- Once upon a time in the west (Bronson!)
- Open Range (great classic form western)
- High Noon
- Django
- True Grit (the Duke of course, though the remake with the Dude was not bad)

That's seven, I'm sure I could add at least a dozen more in there, just too many great ones to pick from!
I am looking for the following Deadlands minis:  Shotgun Thug, Lost Soul, Cleaners, Railroad Workers & Feral Dead. If you have any of these minis, or if you are one, please send me a PM.

Well I've lead an evil life, so they say, but I'll outrun the Devil on judgement day.

The Magnificent Seven, Has to be number one on every western list
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon  the best of the cavalry trilogy for my money
Dances with Wolves, One of Costner's better films, though I like "The Postman" too
Son of the Morning Star, An excellent telling of the Custer story with a reasonable attempt at accuracy.
The Shootist, Sheer brilliance
The Searchers, Wayne and Ford at their absolute best!
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, not the greatest movie in the world, I just like it.

They will not force us,
They will stop degrading us,
They will not control us,
We will be victorious!!
