Help! Clear Coat ruined my figs!
« on: 29 September 2011, 01:25:57 PM »
There was no humidity. No hot out. Not cold. I did a spray test first. But still, when I sprayed my minis that I worked a long time on, using a spray I use all the time, I got gunk all over. Looking I on LAF some suggestions involved putting more clearcoat on. Tried that. Any suggestions that don't involved starting over?

Here's wear the white speckles are.

Respraying with another coat of varnish usually fixes it.

Possibly you could dampen some paper towel with lacquer thinner, and sort of dab at the problem areas until you loosen the white spots enough to wipe them, off.  It's likely to take off some of the underlying paint, but it might be worth trying before you strip them and start over.

Yep or brush on. There are a few tails of woe like this on forums and this is best avenue though not fool proof

First option could be to use a matt varnish (from vallejo for instance) and apply it with a brush. Usually it works.

The second option is to slightly repaint (a kind of wash with GW ink wash) the area.

When this happens to me, I spray the same clear varnish into the cap or a container for 4-5 seconds (forming a small pool of liquid varnish) and then paint it over the affected area with a clean brush.

Cleans up the frosting nicely; the varnish is soluble in itself (of course) and gentle repeated brush strokes help tease out the trapped micro-bubbles of air.

Which brush on varnish do you recommend?  Preferably one thats available in the US.

This is one one the main reasons I've not really varnished anything yet and prefer to handle carefully. I don't think I could stand seeing my minis ruined by what should just be a protective layer.
