quick red coat Q
« on: December 05, 2008, 08:02:31 PM »
Ok I am geting ready to paint some of my Eurika FIW scots, and I was the only reds I have right now are GW "red gore" and "blood red"
Which of these two would be truer to the the Uniform used at that time
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Use "Red Gore" for shades and "Blood Red" as a main colour. British redcoats were sometimes almost orange, 'cause the colour tended to fade. Anyway, I would recommend to add another, darker colour. In GW terms "Scab Red" works well. There's also a Foundry set, mysteriously called "British Redcoat", which makes life a bit easier. Here's an example what I produced by using this set (plus a dark shade):

Sadly, the matt varnish ate some of the highlights. :(

Which is all you need.

Use the "gore" for the mid tone.
Mix "gore" and black for the shade.
Use the "blood" for the highlight - or mix in a little of the "gore" if it's too bright for your tastes.

Okay, haven't wasted a thought on mixing as that's not my cup of tea. ;)
Anyway, perhaps substitute black for a dark brown to darken red. Results in warmer tones.

That's what I use, but then again, Orctrader is an expert painter and far better than me, so I wouldn't argue with him  :(

I recently got the Foundry Redcoat set and based on an initial trial, they are very good!

Thanks for the compliment on my painting  :)  no argument though.  I use brown as well to mix in with reds.  Just depends on what I'm after.  But in this case, the black - only a little - mixed in with a dark red produces a great shade tone.

I believe those figures have the cowhide knapsack which should be brown IIRC.

My standard combination for redcoats is (starting with a black basecoat)
- red gore (usually 2 coats)
- blood red for highlighting
then
- a generous wash with one of the new GW magic washes: Baal Red
- final highlights with blood red again

the wash works like a charm in tying the base colour and the accents together,
it actually feels a bit like cheating ;)

I used "Baal Red" for the first time recently when I was attempting [unsuccessfully] to get a Santa figure done for the Christmas painting comp. I was very impressed by it, having used the GW Mechrite red over a black undercoat, followed by a Vallejo red and a final highlight of scarlet, although the correct numbers and shades escape me at the moment  :(

I was really impressed by the depth of colour it provided. I've always struggled to get decent results with my reds, but this method gave me a really good effect with realistic highlights. I will try using Baal with the Foundry Napoleonic British red set soon, as though I do like the shade, it doesn't have enough "depth" for me.

It's not cheating at all, as far better painters than me use washes to outstanding effect  :D
