Kislev Warband for Mordheim [PICS]
« on: October 02, 2011, 12:07:10 PM »
Hello all! For Mason I painted this fantastic bunch of classic Citadel figures as a Kislev Warband for Mordheim. The idea was to give them natural colours with red accents. I kept them quite understated without gold or fancy colours. I think the effect worked quite well. Initially I painted the shields black (as you can see on some pictures) but after seeing them the client decided he'd rather have red shields. I was happy to oblige and added some shield designs to tie in with the models that already had painted shield designs. Anywa, they were a lot of fun to paint and I think they will make a very nice warband for Mordheim, if perhaps a bit short on missile weapons.

Here are pictures of the individual models:

Before giving me this commission I painted a test model for the client in exchange for a Rat Ogre model. Bringing the total number of models in the warband to sixteen.

As you can see this model appears twice in the warband so I did my best to change the paint jobs as much as possible.

I hope you enjoy the pictures! If you want to see what I used the Rat Ogre for you can view the pictures here:

Wow, these look really nice. You mention that they are classic Citadel...well they must be "old" classic Citadel, I don't recognise any of them. And I have citadel figures from the early 80s. Ok, so I acknowlege that I am not as old as some on here but I felt bad no recognising a single figure.

My favourite would have to be:

VERY WELL DONE! You've done a SPLENDID job bringing them all to life...Mason is a Cool Guy; nice to think he's getting these Fellows. As always with the Old Minis, there are quite a few Old Friends in the mix...some of which I still have...the Hunter with the Bowie Knife is hanging out on my table at the moment,
I'd NEVER join a club that would have me as a member.  G.Marx

There is something deeply romantic about classic GW Miniatures - and this warband is a fine example of just how wonderful some of those old figures were - very jealous... Indeed they make many of their more recent products look garish, overdone and toy like.

Well, to be honest I didn't know a single one of them either and I couldn't find them on the Stuff Of Legends (but I didn't search for many of them either). So there may be some other models mixed in without me knowing. I'm sure Mason can elaborate. I know this model is a much more recent official Kislevite, but I don't know for what range he originally was released:

Thanks all for the comments! I really enjoy painting up old lead for people as I get to see so many wonderful oldies in the flesh and I get to paint them too! I'm sure they will fit in very nicely in Masons Krappefortt project 8):

Regarding the figures;
They are all old Citadel figures but only one is an official Kislevite.
All the other figures are from various ranges, Fighters and Rangers, mostly, with the occasional Barbarian/Viking thrown into the mix.
I have been collecting old Citadel classic 80's figures to add to my Krappefortt/Mordheim project as the figures that they produced at that time were their best (IMO). I have a few more to paint up, and WILL be asking Pil to do at least some of them, as I do not have the time to get them all done myself, and love his style of painting.
Thanks again, Pil. Be contacting you soon about the next warband.

Beautiful warband, Pil.

Most of these are represented somewhere on SOL, you just have to know where to look  ;)

Several of these are Fighters from the C01 Fighter range (Ivan Nozski, Dolgar, and Achmed):

Also Eric the Bald:

Also Brigand and Old Fighter (shown only as drawings on SOL):

A couple of them are Rangers from the C07 Rangers line (Hunter, Trapper):

The fellow with the glasses is an Empire Gunnery Captain from the F2 Fighter range:

The gentleman with the spiked helmet is Otto Wolvesbane from the F2 Lords of Battle line:
http://solegends.com/citjour87a/cj87ap33af3lordofbattle-01.htm

The bare-chested gentleman is Arnulf from the F3 Barbarian line:
http://solegends.com/citjour87a/cj87ap33bf3barbarians-01.htm

The guy with the staff is the C02 Wizard Ivan Bloodblast:
http://solegends.com/citfly/citfly85/198506/fly8506-rx1-100.htm

The gentleman with the spear is Chauncey from the F2 Dogs of War line:
http://solegends.com/citfight/citf2DOW.htm

The "true" Kislevite is Kislevite Kossar 1 from the short-lived Warhammer Kislev range.

The heavily-armored gentleman with the sword is believed to be from the Citadel Collector's series 1100 Fighter range, either a 1110 Anti-hero or a 1113 Evil Fighter:

Wow, thanks for the info! I really liked the model with the staff, the wizard-type figure, though the detail was a bit soft and to some extent filled with old paint, he painted up nicely 8)

Wow, Heldrak, that was some work you put in there before you posted! :o

All those old figures just screamed out as perfect for a ragged band of Kislevite mercenaries off to pillage at Krappefortt.

It took a while to assemble enough of them, and with a couple more that I have, including a bear (!) added to these lovely figures that Pil has painted they will be perfect for their purpose.

You did an excellent job, he was a bit grotty.
If I come across another one, I will see if I can get my hands on him for you.

I think you did a great job assembling them! As for the Wizard, at first I tried a reversed colour scheme on the cloak: white in the recesses and dark on the raised areas, like this Russian Mink Coat worn by Anna Wintour where all the lighter bellies of the mink skins are sown together:

It didn't work out though as the bands were too narrow and the effect just didn't work, so I switched to dark in the recesses and light on the raised areas. Because of the high contrast between the dark and light colours it still looks like a great deal of small animals stitched together, which is further enhanced by one of the creatures standing next to him as a familiar (a great touch that really makes this model work).

I haven't started to look into old Citadel humans yet, for now it's just skeletons and the occasional Slann, though I have to say I am greatly enjoying the collecting and building of classic armies 8)

Wow, what a great selection of figs - and awesome paintjobs to boot! Good job there, Mason and Pil!

I need to finish off the bases of the figs you sent me, Pil... Oh well, tonight I'm finishing the last document for the project I've been on for the last year. After that, it's painting time!!! =D
