My colonial adventure have now started!
« on: October 16, 2011, 10:15:28 PM »
I have now painted my first colonial figures ever. I painted up a few of Foundry's Baluchi and Arab mercenaries. After finishing painting the arabs I discovered that I had painted them the wrong way, so I have to re-paint them. :-(
But here is my proud Baluchi

I think they're really nice. Why the re-paint?

Looking good.
I think that the Baluchis are some of Foundry's nicer
D.A. figures.
Excellent painting on the figures.

The "Pakistanian" Baluchi are fine, but I made some mistakes when I painted the Omani arabs/baluchi (Foundry's Baluchi in arab dress). I painted their knifes and shields in the wrong colour.

But could someone help me with a "simple" question? I saw on a blogg that the Omani arabs/baluchi had saffron dyed robes, is that correct? Is white wrong?

We are going to try out Death in the Dark Continent. They have a slightly different basing in the rules, but we prefer 5x5cm.

According to Burton the Omanis favoured saffron-dyed gowns. But it seems they were a yellowish colour, not the bright orange of a Buddhist monk's saffron robes. I'm afraid I can't find any reference to Baluchi guards dressing in white. Actual Baluchis from Baluchistan (as opposed to the cosmopolitan bunch of hired guns that were nicknamed 'Baluchis' in Africa) certainly dressed in white and off-white though, and white gowns were the height of fashion among Zanzibari Arabs, so I don't think it is a huge leap in the dark to have some of your Baluchis in white.

Also, both Verney Lovett Cameron and Joseph Thompson say that while their officers dressed in rich finery, the rank and file were grimy and greasy and their clothes were tatty, dirty rags.

Thank you! I have never really like to paint my figures dirty, I have always been a parade-ground-shiny-and-clean kind of guy. But saffron yellow sounds good, I will re-paint those in arab dress. (not those in the picture).
