Overgrown Cemetery or Graveyard inspiration pictures PIC HEAVY
« on: October 27, 2011, 03:42:20 PM »
After visiting Nunhead Cemetery last week and taking a few pictures, I thought that posting them on here would be useful for anyone intending to build one.

Nunhead Cemetery is a once-abandoned Cemetary in South East London. It was built in 1840 (I think!), one of seven large purpose-built cemeteries, to help London cope with the overflowing churchyards in the capital.

It was abandoned by the company that was responsible for it before the Second World War and has only recently been taken over by the local council.
You can see that it has been abandoned for decades. If you look carefully at some of the pictures you can see gravestones and monuments in the undergrowth.
In fact, the background of all the pictures would have graves visible if it was not for the reclaimation by nature.

Apologies if this type of thread already exists.
Just thought that it could prove useful to some.

Very inspiring.  I would need to stock up on lots of ivy and foliage to do it justice, Thanks for sharing the pics. :)

Nice pics.  I love old graveyards but unfortunately there's nothing local that comes close to the beauty of London's Magnificent Seven (Highgate rules!) or Europe's ancient burial grounds.  Canada's too young, I guess.  There are some beautiful cemeteries down in the city but, in general, they only go back about 150 years or so and are too well maintained to give one any creepy feelings.  Still great places for a walk, though.

The oldest gravestone I've seen that is fully legible is in a rescued pioneer cemetery that's just under 3 miles from home.  It goes back to 1812.  There are some markers at another small pioneer memorial just over a mile away that date to the late 1700's but you'd have to wet the stones to have any chance of reading anything.  (My brother visited Salem, Mass. during the summer, lucky dog.  That goes back to the 1600's!)

I've been collecting pictures of cemeteries, ruins, abandoned vehicles, haunted houses, megaliths, creepy nature, etc. for several years now and have over 2300 at the moment.  If you have no objection, I'll add some of yours to my Nunhead folder.

I really want to do a diorama/vignette of an abandoned and overgrown section of a cemetery, preferably with a small mausoleum (something like Uncle Mike's Crypt of Cthulhu).  Some day...

Very inspiring!  I've only done Highgate thus far, but would love to visit some of the other six!
