Question about jacket worn by British sailors
« on: November 19, 2011, 02:59:52 AM »
I'm about to begin painting my British government sailors for my "great pirate saga" and have a question about the short jacket some of my British sailors are wearing.  I'm using the Old Glory 25s European Sailors (OGP14) and some have little padded rolls of cloth running front to back on the shoulders of the jacket.  Is that characteristic of a British sailor's jacket or another nation?  If it is British, should that padded roll be painted blue like the rest of the jacket or another color?  If so what color?  Is there a reference book I should have for this process?  Thanks.  Richard

I am assuming that because no one has answered then either no one knows or a picture is needed to help identify the problem.

My first thoughts were that they could be the tabs for epaulettes to be attached through or "padded shoulders" in the swashbuckler style but that would be an earlier period.

If you are painting British sailors of the Napoleonic period I would suggest it is just another OG anomolie and file them off.

I've seen that pack, and it is intended to cover a much earlier period than Napoleonics. IIRC circa 1700-1730s?

Yep I have them too, Blue is the way I went with them. If you are meaning the raised seam looking thing running around the point where the shoulder/Sleeve would be I would paint it blue.

Elizabethan minis work Jacks like this and often the piping (which is what I think it is) could be coloured or it could represent it being a sleeveless jack. But these figures are for 1700 onwards so would go for blue

PS, your name "15mm" may throw people when looking at the thread which is about 28mm  :D
