Prussian Uniform Question
« on: December 05, 2007, 09:05:00 PM »
Simple question (I hope):  what rank badges/markings were worn by Prussian NCOs and junior officers in the early 1880s?

Hi Dave,

I can only help you with the 1870's I'm afraid. If you want I'm happy to peer into my Osprey FPW tomes for you. You could always ask the question on the TMP 19th Century Discussion page. There are people out there with a frightening amount of uniform knowledge.

Are you painting your England Invaded Prussians? When I painted mine I just made the NCO and officer uniforms up as I went along. I then hid behind the 'hey, it's VSF' excuse. For officers I painted all the lace, frilly bits and scrambled egg on the epaulettes in a silver/white colour or gold as you go up the ranks (slightly historical and based on 1870 patterns). For NCO's I painted white markings on the collars and cuffs which are otherwise plain for junior ranks. You could always use a different colour on the helmet plates to define rank.
Don't!

Yes, the question was relating to my England Invaded figures and I decided to use the same excuse as you in the end.

The officer was easy - nice silver epaulettes with a white cord on the left shoulder  - I tried brass/gold but the figure looked like he was wearing more bling than a Persian officer in the film 300!

For NCOs I found uniform details of German troops in Africa circa 1900, in which they are wearing silver rank chevrons. I will go with this design.

Th varnish on my first Prussian unit is drying as I type this, so I will hopefully get to post a photo tomorrow.

I was wondering about this myself and did some looking awhile back.  Here are some sites that you might find useful:
While not dealing with Germans, this site dose give some ideals for some foreign service medals
http://www.austro-hungarian-army.co.uk/index.htm
This site gives some history on the German states and also shows what the medals look like
http://home.att.net/~david.danner/militaria/states.htm
Another site that has some pics of medals
http://www.medalnet.net/default.htm
Here is a site that has medals from all over the world
http://www.worldmedals.co.uk/For/for.htm
This site deals more with WW1 in Africa but there are some pictures of uniforms from the late 1880's.  Great ideals for some campaign medals.  If your VSF Germans are like mine, then they already have a flying corp.  If you look under the pilot section there are some air medals.

Here are some pictures of different ribbons
http://www.kaiserzeit.com/2-cat/medal-ribbons.htm#top
This web ring has many sites about medals from other countries

I hope these sites give you the info that you were looking for.  If not, then make it up.  My VSF Germans have officers that have served all ove the world and off world, an air corp, landships, plus the regular infantry/navy.  All these branches need different medals, also it's fun to make up campaign medals.

Thanks for the links - I had forgotten about the colonial uniforms site. Chevrons on the upper left arm will be perfect for my NCOs.

I am painitngmine using the FPW books from Osprey. The officers have the same colour shoulder boards as the troopers, but wear a silver sash shot through with black. I will have a look tonight for more details.
