Zed Horde Base
« on: 03 December 2011, 12:26:56 AM »
I finally finished my horde base and it took forever.  I have enough zeds to do another two bases.  I still have to seal the base and add gore, but I am waiting a couple of days because it is raining right now.  Sorry for the poor picture quality.

Hope you like.

That is just brilliant. I don't like putting more then one figure on a base usually, but for zombies this is perfect. Something tells me you will be inspiring a lot more hordes on this forum.

Zeds are a mix of Victory Force, Studio, Reaper, and Wyrd.

Base is a 110mm from Privateer Press and I filed the facing indicators off.  There are twenty-eight zeds on it.  I could have fit about thirty-five, but I would have scraped the paint off of them trying to glue them in place.  I am going to do two more of these at some point in the future.  There are three more images on my blog.

I cant claim the idea as I saw it here first.  I just cant remember the members name to give credit to since there are two or three prolific zombie players here.  The only privateer base that I have seen with the facing indicators is the 110mm.

Nice base, although I prefer single based minis, even zeds.
It sure will be quicker to move the horde, but if your streets are cluttered with vehicles and such, it seems a bit cumbersome to try and fit it in. even worse, if a survivor runs down a small alley...

The idea that I have is that after a group of zeds feed they will form a horde. It will be able to loose individual zeds into buildings and into alleyways each turn. The press of bodies at the entrances to each will keep the horde intact in one big mass. For other terrain and detritus on the streets the horde will have to stop at the barrier, and then move over it the next turn. It will make the horde slower, but it is pretty much indestructible so the survivors will have to exert a lot of effort to avoid one. The horde will also not have a facing since there are too many individuals that would be looking in every direction.  The horde will be able to smash through linear barriers like fences and doors much easier too.  Another bonus for me is that when they form, I can replay all the loose zeds.  This should cut down the amount of individually based models that I have to produce.  I currently have over 180 individuals painted.  After I finish the other two horde bases, I can keep recycling the individuals into play.

Very nice work on the zombie horde! It's quite a costly affair to put together but you did it well 8)

Nice job snitchy.

 :)

My hordes back use of any old figure I have left in the bits box, for the centre, with thhe interesting zeds around the edges.

In total my 3 hordes have a total of 100 zeds, the largest is 49.

The advantage of the bigger bases is you can really add some character, such as a bunch feeding on an unlucky "survivor".

The AR:SE rules, on my blog, also contain ideas for how to use a horde - they count as a mobile spawn point.

I thought that you had provided the original inspiration.  For the three bases that I am doing up, I am not planning on quite that many.  I figure that one base will have 29 to 32 on it.  The second base will be a bit more scenic with a crumbling barricade and the horde breaking through.  I still have not decided on what rules to use.  I have yours, and I am also playing with the idea of house rules using ATZ.  In all honesty, I will probably be using both.

You are not kidding.  When I worked out the cost, I swore that I would not tell my wife how much the mini cost.  Thanks for the compliments all.

Well, you might just have convinced me on the benefits of a horde AND given me a reason not to get rid of all those ghastly WF zeds after all.  ::)
