Arctic encounters inspiration needed!

Im going to make an Arctic scenario where the Threshold agents will meet different opponents at random.
the story is that an expedition has recovered an ancient artefact they need to escape to the boat.

Im simply going to make an Arctic encounter table, i have a few ideas myself, but could use more if possible.

here are the list of what i can think of:

Angry polar bear
Eskimo hunters, either with primitive weapons or rifles
Competitor archaeologist trying to get the artifact
Sasquatch / Wendigo

The inspiration in my case was Swedish explorer Andrée in the balloon Örnen II (The Eagle) which crashed on Hvitöya.

The obvious one would be Mountain of madness type thing. Then you get shoggoths and elder things.

The Tuunbaq, from Dan Simmons' The Terror (go find a copy, it's amazing and will cram you full of arctic inspiration).

Mi-Go would also work. The arctic would probably be quite warm by their standards, and would make a great out of the way place for them to base stuff that would be too obtrusive in other parts of the world.

John Carpenter's The Thing with a 20's Tech Level would be perfect. Maybe check out the Shakleton movie too...

I agree with the Shoggoths and Elder Things. You could also add giant albino Penguins (or even man eating penguins?).

As far as rules go (and I only say this as I'm working on some for Shocking Tales #4) I would use some sort of 'Exposure' rules. Similar to the rules for 'Starvation' in Shocking Tales #3. Giant sightless penguins are a must as well.

They are now... but in the 1920s they were driven to extinction by the last crazed investigators in a doomed expedition or just eaten by shoggoths.


Are you sure they are actually penguins anyway?
From a distance they may look like penguins, but as you get closer...
