Color scheme for Commissar - Second Commissar with Pic
« on: 18 December 2011, 06:47:31 PM »
Hello,
First off, the RCW is not my area at all. I bought a pack of Copplestone's Bolshevik Commissars to paint up for my son for Xmas.

http://www.copplestonecastings.co.uk/images/bc2.jpg

After doing some research, I've seen quite a few different ways to paint them up and I've not come across anything official other than black leather for the pistol wielding fellow with the megaphone and brown of various shades for the flag carrier.

I was wondering if there is an accurate 'uniform' for these guys or if there was in fact a lot of variety. It seems like a pretty crazy period... even in unit photos, the variety is staggering.

Sorry to sound like a newb, and I certainly appreciate the help!

Nothing wrong with painting them with lots of civilian clothing. A lot of "Commissars" were  straight from civilian positions (Stalin, for example). I would add a big red star, red armband, or red trousers or something though.

You shouldn't need too many of them. It wasn't like WWII, with them down to every level. Mostly they were only at higher levels (regiment and above). They had no military role (though obviously the odd one might do more than was strictly his ambit).

Color scheme for Commissar- update with pic

Hello,
Here's what I ended up going with. Not a great paintjob and photograph as I only had little over an hour to paint, with a bit of time here and there today to base him up. I'm heading out of town for the holidays, and the fig is a gift for my son so I had to rush it :)

Well, since this a rushed paintjob, I reckon it would be inappropriate to give it to your son. Surely he deserves better. Now, that I think of it, this miniature will only give you trouble, take away precious shelf space etc etc... I think the best way forward would be if lower my aesthetic standards and take it off your hands!

...  ;D

Quit yer moanin'! :) Brilliant result and nice colour scheme, which I will copy shamelessly!  :-* :-* :-*

Thanks for the comments fellows, I really shouldn't have bought the Back of Beyond figures as the last thing I need to is to get interested in another period.

Remington I guess you'll have to wait for the next one :)

GW Tallarn Flesh, Dwarf Flesh, Ogryn wash, Dwarf Flesh, Dwarf/Elf 50/50, Elf Flesh. I used a gray primer. It was kind of 'Dallimore Method' since I just acquired the Foundry Painting books, but I like to use at least one wash on skin to tie it together.,

@Blackwolf: Thanks, but you're crazy- you'd be regressing :) I recall being beaten by you in the LPL, plus your minis are recognizable as yours! I think mine are well done, but nothing really sets them apart stylistically.

My son is graduating High School, heading to college in the fall for pre-law with a social law emphasis. He's big into social studies and probably knows more about the politics of the RCW than I do, so a second commissar seems an appropriate gift :)

Not sure if the color is appropriate, I couldn't find a color reference for a greatcoat of that style, and it seems like just about anything goes for commissars.

I could paint Copplestone figures all day... I love 'em. I don't like the oversized sausage finger this guy has, but I didn't feel like filing it down.
