Project - Zulu Dawn
« on: December 30, 2011, 02:08:00 PM »
Here's my first little project:  The start of my AZW collection/

I've caught the DA bug and taken the plunge with a box of Warlord Games Unmarried Zulu Warriors.

The box contains 32 plastic warriors with loads of spare arms, heads etc  And a metal honcho by Empress Miniatures.

Here is a pic of the start!

2 hours later i've got them all de-sprued and cleaned up. (2hrs! am i slow or did i underestimate how long it'd take?)

First four minis assembled and glued to bases.

Finally got them all assembled and glued to bases.

This shot is just to show the variety of poses available with the supplied parts. All 8 minis are the same body type.

Well thats all for now.  Will be milliputting the bases and undercoating tonight then hopefully get them painted over the weekend.

Anyone got links to any pics of these minis painted up that i might take a bit of inspiration from for painting?

Well, you could do a lot worse than to have a rummage through Plynkes' posts on here. He has got the knack for painting tribesmen really well.
They will not force us,
They will stop degrading us,
They will not control us,
We will be victorious!!

I've changed it to links (and added a few more), don't want to queer your pitch, after all...

You might want to have a bit of a nose around the Prof's Darkest Africa site, too. No Zulus but lots of African skintones:

We're looking to you for the first painted examples of these Warlord Games fellows I think, Kevin, other than the ones on their site. I look forward to seeing them. :)

Thanks very much for those.  It was the skin work I was looking for really so all those pics are very helpful.

I'll grab the pictures and stick them in a file.  I wouldn't want such great painting showing up mine when i finally get my own pics up here lo!

Rather than black undercoat, I strongly suggest you use the army painter leather brown as the undercoat, then block on details and splash on army painter dark tone with a brush.  It looks great and halves your painting time.

I appreciate the advice and sounds good to me but I have a tin of black undercoat and am too tight to buy more right now so i'll have to give your technique a try when i've used up the black :)

Here is a suggestion for a paint recipe that Toby Lee (Artmaster Studio) gave me and looks great:

BC - Vallejo Dark rust
Wash - GW Devlan mud wash
1st Highlight with Vallejo Dark rust
2nd Highlight Mix Vallejo Beige with Dark rust

Here is the link for some inspirational pics...enjoy!

Well....

Started painting today. Got the first coat of skin done on eight minis and it's taken nearly forty minutes! And I'm pretty much a member of the 'slap-it-on' school of mini painting too!

I think that after I finally get these done I might have to hold off buying box sets and stick to buying one blister at a time or the dread of how long it'll take to paint them will mean I never get started again!

Wow Heldrak!! Those are incredible!

If I remember rightly on eBay there are some Zulus painted by Dragon Painting Services (DPS) for sale. Can't be bothered to find a link, but put DPS 28mm Zulu into eBay search engine and it should bring them up. Theres some Masai on there for sale too I think and some extortionately priced plastic Mahdists. Should give you some inspiration for painting anyway as although some of DPS stuff is expensive the painting is fantastic.
