Calling Pulp experts - Jungle Stories magazine?
« on: December 30, 2011, 10:51:44 PM »
Hello,
I am having a difficult time determining if this magazine ever existed. I've done some serious Googling and so far I've not found any info on this particular issue:

I found the image in an inspiration file on my hard drive, and I have no idea where I got it.

Anyone know anything about 'Jungle Stories', if it existed in 1969, and who the beautiful female is on the cover? I'm guessing a 'not-Sheena'.
Thanks!

Looks like modern computer art to me (especially the two Africans), meant to look like an old magazine. Jungle Stories was obviously a real magazine, but something about that cover doesn't ring true. The writing down the side doesn't look like the names of stories, more like crediting other people's 3D items that have been used in creating the image. Hair, Jungle top and bottom, jungle props? I would say Victoria 3 is the name of the female 3D body, and Mike 2 is the two males, and they were designed by some guy called Daz. Real issues of that magazine have the titles of lurid stories within on the cover, not stuff like that.

I think you're right, looks like computer to me too.
Just found an other one, but an original, from "Double Action"

I have seen that image before and i think it was on an artists website with a number of other recreated pulp mag covers that he had done. the real Jungle Stories mag ran from 1939 to sometime in the 50s They featured Ki-gor jungle lord one of the best of the Tarzan knock offs..I have a number of reprints they are available from adventure house

and the vintage library

Thanks guys. I figured something was off myself, as all my research indicated Jungle Stories wasn't around in '69. I was also doing some searches using the words on the side of the cover with nothing helpful popping up.

I'd like do a conversion of the jungle beauty, and was curious if there was any info out there... I guess not. I'll have to be happy with what I have :)

DAZ is a 3D graphics modelling program

I have seen top down figures for Virtual Gaming Programs that have been made with this

No dear, they are not toys, they are models

Thanks odd duck and pauld. After a long delve into the somewhat eye-opening realm of cgi modeling, I found the artist's gallery:

Until I investigated this cover, I had no idea so many current fantasy artists used 3D modeling programs to pose figures. Basically they import a posed, lit model into Photoshop or other graphics programs, and layer painting and effects digitally.

I've been marveling at the skill of digital illustrators in things like the Spectrum fantasy art books... now I'm seriously disappointed. Give me some Frazetta or Rakham please. One thing I do like about the fake covers this 'Mikeall' makes is that the digital origin is hidden pretty well.
