BoB Vehicles question
« on: December 14, 2007, 04:39:02 PM »
Hi,

After reading some novels of the Caspasian series from Anthony Conway, I decided begin with the painting of some Soviets, Whites and Chinese for BoB games... but suddenly realized that I don't know what kind of vehicles (apart of armoured trains!   ) were used in that period (early-mid 20's) in that part of the world.

Can anyone help me?

Regards

I've just read these (are there only 4?) they really are great books - complete escapist fantasy of course! but inspiring in the Pulp/BOB way.

You might also consider the one or other armoured car:
Lanchester AC (done by HLBS* and Old Glory)
Austin AC, British pattern (done by HLBS* and Sloppy Jaloppy)
Austin Putilov Kegresse Armoured Halftrack (done by HLBS*)
Austin Putilov AC (done by HLBS* and in 1/50 by ESPEWE**)

*The ACs done by HLBS are quite long oop. They were discontinued due to cost reasons. Hard to get nowadays...
**ESPEWE was a GDR producer of model cars and oldtimers in a Lledo/MoY-style. Those Putilovs pop up on ebay Germany from time to time. However, they could be expensive, about 40 Euros the last time I checked.
Hope this helps.
TANK POLO? God, how our gardener hated that game!

As far as I know, yes. There are only four. But they are fun... A short of James Bond in the 20's!  :)

Helps a lot!  :) Thank you. I will check... Though, I'm afraid, my German is absolutely elemental (Next year, however, I will begin to study it... There are too many books in German I want to read!!)

We are doing some new armored cars in 2008.  To add to the lineup of the 5 model T's we have now (two are armored!)

I have a 1/55 Austin armored car about 60% completed (this is the early one with the side by side turrets)  The Putilov is started as well.  But with so many models to do, including the P23 halftracks for Warlord China, I'm thinking about having a sort of 100 club for models.  Well, more like a 30 to 40 club.

We'll take suggestions on models, and post ideas of models we want to do ourselves.  When 30 to 40 models are pre-ordered (name goes on a list, and payment is when we ship), we'll go ahead with casting.

For suggestions, visit the Brigade Games forum.  A lot of folks seems to want the Rolls Royce Armored car and Rolls Tender (if we do that, we'll lead Lawrence of Arabia miniatures as well!).

Retail...most of the armored cars seem to get into the $20 range.

Any interest?

Two books concerning vehicles, almost guaranteed to get one drooling, are a couple of the old (1970) Blandford Press 'Mechanized Warfare in Colour' series.

'Military Transport of World War One'
'Tanks and other A.F.V's 1900-18'

They are both presumably long out of print but, if you can get your hands on them, do so! There are so many obscure and fascinating vehicles in them that one is constantly saying 'I want that one and that one...'.  In fact, it's surprising that so many of them have never been kitted in any form, despite how many were used in real life.  They're not all connected to BOB by any means but definitely WWI and interwar periods.

Speaking of WWI, what would the odds be of someone producing an 'Old Bill' L.G.O.C. B Type Bus in kit form? The chassis alone is useful for so many conversions.

Cheers,
Mike  :)

I own this book 'Tanks and other A.F.V's 1900-18' and I second that it is a goldmine. I found mine at AbeBooks then. It can be found here, though you may want search further for a "better looking" sample:

I'd say this book is a 'must-have', even after nearly fourty years...
Yeah, an 'Old Bill' L.G.O.C. B Type Bus would be a nice tranport for my Quar, too.
