Finished a quick paint job on a couple of Mantic games zombies today:

Nothing fancy paintwise:
-Basecoat of Vallejo Green Grey, followed by a slightly thinned wash of GW Leviathan Purple.
-Drybrush again in basecoat colour, followed by a second drybrush in 50/50 Vallejo Green Grey and Basic Fleshtone.
-Wash in GW Gryphonne Sepia (again slightly thinned).
-Give another light drybrush in the 50/50 mix, just enough to cover the highest points. (I covered my pallet while the wash dried, to save some on mixing. The wash dries fairly quickly anyway.)
-The loincloths and exposed bone were done with Vallejo Iraqui Sand (You'll see this colour come by a lot of times... I love it, it's so versatile!), washed with Gryphonne Sepia and higlighted with Iraqui Sand and Vallejo Pale Sand.
-Gore was done with 50/50 Tamiya Smoke and Tamiya Transparent Red.
And that's it!
Waiting for the wash to dry was actually the most time consuming part of the painting...
Luckily I had some chores to do to help pass the time.  :?

I really like the way the blood  looks in this picture, it has that bright, splatter-house look seen in the original Dawn of the Dead. I have been using TTR for gore on my zombies, I will have to pick up some Smoke as well. Nice work.

Very nice! For modern zombies I think you could do with a bit more variety in the clothing, unless these are meant to be the result of experiments and whatnot. Of course for a speedy job simple clothing also suffices and they seem to be very effective!
Let me hear the battle cry
Calling on the wind
Let me see the banners fly
Before the storm begins

problem is they're actually fantasy zombies/ghouls, so no contemporary clothing  :(
I too painted mine in single colours so they could serve as orderlies or patients.

Your zombies look great. I like the monotone look. It separates the living from the dead at a distance, which is a great plus at gaming distance. My zombies are all painted in shades of grey-green with gore. Not at all realistic for this very reason.

Thanks, all!

What he said....  ;)

Not too big a problem for me, as they'll be joining a (small) mob of clearly modern zombies. These will just be ones that had their clothes shredded more badly when grabbed by the mob.
I'm considering doing the next batch of five in orange rags, so they'll look like convicts that didn't quite escape...
Most of my zombies are painted this way, with clearly "dead" colours and gore, with only the odd splash of colour, to distinguish them from the living.
I haven't had any problems with players not clearly distinguishing living from dead so far. But that could also be because I usually only give each player one survivor....  >:D They tend to pay more attention that way.

My thoughts exactly   :)

Doh ! Now why didn't I think of that. I'm sorry mate, but that's too good an idea not to steal borrow  :D
Ofcourse, that does mean prison tats and I suck at the whole freehand painting  :(

Steal away!
And thanks for the idea, I hadn't even considered the option of prison tats. :)

Tattoos and small script give me nightmares too. I could paint them, but I've better uses for the time that would take...
So I cheat!  :o I use this:

I have a red, blue, black and green 005 pen. Uv-resistant, so no discoloration, and archival grade, so no bleeding through once the ink's thoroughly dry.
The blue and black would work fine for the crude prison tattoos, I think. Just draw them on at the end and, once dry, either glaze with the underlying colour. Or draw them on before you do the last wash/drybrush.
Most artists' suppliers have them nowadays, or you could look around a bit and probably find a deal online.

Yes, I've got a black one somewhere. I've used it as an alternative to a wash for my 15mm sci-fi vehicles.
I might give it a shot, and if the design fails, I could always try to paint a scar over the flaw  ::)
