I agree with leadAsbestos I think the later bases look a bit washed out. Perhaps a compromise somewhere in between the two?

Well I must say I quite like the grey stony bases, partly because it's unusual, but also because it does convey the idea of the barren, inhospitable northlands rather nicely.

But I agree the darker 'earthy' basing shows of the paintwork on the figures better.

Nice work both ways though  :)

What about sand colour?
I think that because the "snow" looks like the frothy water that you find at the edge of the sea where the waves die away before sinking into the sand and I can see these as Vikings landing on a beach

Thanks for the suggestion.

That's how I usually base most of my mini's as it allows the light to refelct around the figure. With the Norwegians I was looking for something of a contrast so I may just go with the darker basing and drybrush a snowy white over the raised surface.

Fine bases with both colors.
But I do like the brown a little more.

Thanks again to everyone for their imput  8). I think I'm swaying towards going for the darker bases with a drybrush of snowy white as the final highlight.

I'll give it a try on a few mini's and post up the results.
