Upper Silesia 1919/21
« on: 29 March 2012, 12:44:09 PM »
Just re-reading the Osprey book on the freikorps, and it gives a fascinating summary of a series of little known action in Upper Silesia between 1919 and 1921.  British, French and italian troops were deployed, though the Italians were the only ones to suffer casualties (250) as they tried to keep the peace between freikorps supported German town dwellers and  Polish regular army supported countryside based Polish insurgents.

Two questions therefore gentlemen.

1. Does anyone have any further reading they can recommend in English?

2. Does anyone know of any orbats?

Thanks

Steve

As for your first question, when I was developing the Freikorps list for T&T, I read F. L. Carsten's "Revolution in Central Europe" (in an English-language edition, as this was what the uni library had available). This is predominantly focused on Germany and Austria (the latter part is particularly interesting, since most other books focus on the Reich), but if I recall correctly, it also has a chapter or two on the Silesian situation, mainly on the background and a descriptive account of events.

He also wrote a book on "The Reichswehr and Politics", which I haven't read, but which also contains a section on the civil war years; I suspect it might be more of a general kind, though, and not too into the details you'd require. You can find that one on Google books:

Richard M. Watt, Bitter Glory: Poland and Its Fate, 1918–1939, Hippocrene Books, 1998. If you can get this from the library, it discusses the conflict in Silesia as well.
