Is that piece of equipment really called a "couillard"?,  lol lol lol, what a great name (considering the firing mechanism looks just the part! Great model by the way.

Just in case anybody wonders why I find the name "couillard" so funny, I'll give a bit of an explanation:

"Couille" is French slang for testicles, much like "balls" is used in English. "Couillard" could be translated as "ballsy". I know, I've got the sense of humor of an 8 year old, but hey, I still play with toy soldiers...

Anyway, I didn't mean to derail the thread, so once again, great model. I love it.

Yours truly,

Sir Dryden

:) Best to have the sense of humour of an 8 year old and live happily  :)
As I said, Iīd googled the name but came up with nothing and when a french speaker told me what it means I wet myself laughing..itīs way too obvious looking at the thing..especially after it has been fired and come to rest with the throwing arm in an upright position!!  lol

Renaud Beffeyte is the french specialist of medievam siege engines.

http://www.armedieval.com/

In his book Art of war in the Middle-Ages, he explains that the couillard is less powerful than a trebuchet but its rate of fire is greater. A trained crew can throw up to ten 30 kgs stones in one hour at a distance of 180 meters. Larger ones can throw 80kgs stones (140kgs for the trebuchet, 250m of distance but only 2 or 3 throws an hour).
