Thought I was being clever. Must remember the search function. lol

The Humphrey Winterton collection has now become my 'go to' for East African inspiration.

To be fair it was from before you joined the LAF, and it would have been hard to find with the search function anyway. If you put 'KAR' into the search field you get forty pages and there is no sign of it in the first few.

You have a couple there that I didn't post. Why not post some more of the ones we haven't seen before?

Plynkes beat me too the punch by about 2 years lol. So to keep my end up I decided to take this post in a related, but slightly different direction.
The commissioner for the Buganda province, J.R.P.Postlethwaite, during the great war, was tasked with raising troops for the K.A.R. One source he found was the Acholi people. The tribesmen were apparently less than willing to enlist and the commissioner used fair means and foul to fill his quota.
The following pics appear to show a recruitment drive among the Acholi. Sadly their is no definitive proof of this but the evidence,(what there is),is highly suggestive. The chaps in the pics following may well be some of the same who later turn up in Plynkes' excellent original post. If not, I still hope they are worth posting.

The first pic in this batch is perhaps the most interesting. From the same 'party' as pictured above but different fellows. Some are wearing a fez with neck cloth. Are these already enlisted and helping recruit new blood? Or is the fez equivalent to taking the kings shilling and the paint signifies joining a war party?

Nice images, I sculpted some hide shields in the Karamajong/Acholi style, although they're a little more narrow than the ones shown. I intend them for a small Lango project.
a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humour, reserve, and caprice.

Dr Mathias- Got some nice Karamajong and some earlier Acholi pics on the hard drive. Will post some in the Colonial section.

Bugsda- I tried but failed to post the link. These pics are from the Humphrey Winterton Collection. Northwestern University. Google should get you there. Over 8000 East African pics from the 1860s onwards. Yum Yum Yum :-*

Me too :D Actually paiting my first Darkest African figs at the mo. Some Empress Zulus. I am gonna try to be disciplined and paint enough for at least T&T before I move on to East Africa.
More from the same albums as above. Unidentified first. From Kenya, strong Masai influence. Then some Karamojan.

More natives photographed by an officer of the 4th K.A.R. This time captain G.R.King.
King charted his time in the K.A.R. and in Africa in a huge collection of albums. These I think date from 1916 to the mid 20s. First the man himself with some Didinga porters. Next a couple of his troops(heliograph crew). Then some more Didingas wearing the Andy Capp head gear.

Those photos are pretty helpful. I'd love to see some shield patterns, have you come across any? I read somewhere that some groups had a heraldry of sorts.

I'm not a big fan of the 'pudding bowl' headdress, too bad cause I'll most likely have to do some :)
