Empress Miniatures' Anglo-Zulu War~17th Lancers
« on: April 02, 2012, 12:16:56 PM »
I've completed my first base of these for my AZW collection. You can gain an insight into my trials and tribulations painting them over on my Blog.
In the meantime, a sample ~

Very nice indeed!

Lovely work

What would be required to paint these up as (9th) Lancers for the 2nd Anglo-Afghan War?

Helmet spikes would appear to be all, though I can't say for sure they wore them in battle. The plastron-fronted tunic worn by the Empress figures appears to be in evidence, alongside a number of other jacket styles. The light-coloured ones are khaki quilted cold-weather jackets. They would make a pretty snazzy conversion project, I reckon. Just make those big lapels, cover up the plastron and generally bulk the jacket up a little, all with greenstuff. Both knee boots and puttees were worn, so you have your choice there, just depends how much you feel like doing conversions.

I should say that I think the 9th's Plastron was red, and judging by that photo (it appears to be a different shade from the rest of the tunic: it's especially noticeable on the fellows on the right) they wore it red side out, unlike the 17th in Zululand, who reversed theirs so the blue side was showing rather than the white (as you can see in the figures on David's blog).

Edit:
Ah, thought so...

Thank you Sir!

I'm not sure that my modelling skills are good enough to do the cold weather jacket but i agree that it would look splendid on a couple of the figures.

[colour blind disclaimer] that SM's uniform looks green to me?  o_o

Yes it does, but it's just funny colouring on that cigarette card. Should be dark blue.

Just noticed that a couple of chaps in the centre of the photo seem to have the blue side showing on their plastron (the two stood either side of the caption sign), so you could have both ways of wearing it in your unit for variety if you want. No reason why not to, as both styles appear to be in evidence on that single photo.

Excellent!

Head swaps for the pill-box hat?

Don't know if they would have worn the pill box hat in action or who makes such heads, but why not if you feel like it? Here's what the Other Ranks one looked like...

As the Empress lancers aren't wearing gloves you need to paint the cuff facings, which as you can see are red, like the collar and plastron. This pic also shows another popular piece of cold weather wear, the poshteen.

Now a poshteen would make a nice conversion too. I thought Empress did pill-box hats in their Maori range; i'll have to check. Again, i'm thinking just one or two figs for variety

They are a different style, not the hotel bell-hop fashion that those lancers wore. I was thinking about separate heads anyway, I'm sure somebody must do one with a body attached.
