Scale comparisons?
« on: January 26, 2008, 11:46:11 PM »
Hi guys, I'm really new to this genre of wargaming (got a little sick of painting wood elves for LoTR) and for some reason after playing COD4 I was really hankering for some real-time combat wargaming. Somehow I latched onto the idea that fighting zombies would be an awesome idea, and so here I am!

I've been looking at a few different producers, especially the ones that produce marine forces, and I've just been wondering about scale. I plan on using GW undead in order to bolster my zombie forces, so as stated before, marine and civilian forces need to be found.

I'm wondering about size comparisons between Foundries 'Street Violence Range'(their SWAT teams and the FBI) and Black Scorpions 'US Marines' Range (Although the Old West Range looks so good it could be used as generic civilians, their priest is rather good as well). Black Scorpions range is stated as 32 mm, where GW (especially its 40k range) is 'apparently' 28mm (closer inspection of an Assault Marine reveals the range to be in the 30's).

So would anyone be able to tell me how they size up? Also, does anyone know any good manufacturers of stock-standard civilians?

Thanks!

John

Black Scorpio are bigger than a lot of other figures but not too much which makes them good for heroes. I have most of their Desolation Row figures lined up to be zombie hunters.

There is a lot of size variation in the Street Violence range but generally they're good with other ranges. Their Police are on the small side though.

The Assault group makes a good range of SWAT figures and you'll probably find something you can use in Westwind's Road kill range.

Civilians are harder to get hold of. There are some oop packs in the Superfigs range but the figures are hit or miss quality wise. You may find some on ebay.

I use Mini Homie figures myself but they're difficult to find too.

Thugz offer an armed civilian option :)

Hello and welcome.

Pappa Midnight has used the Old glory cilivians for some time now, great as survivors, (he uses em as zombies! ;) very cool).

Copplestone has a few media types, as do E4Miniatures.

TAG look nice, (just ordered a load of NBC rangers and marines and swat) Black scorpion marines as nice, 32mm so would blend in with GW zombies nicely as their a little on the large side.

Alternatively as its near future, just max up your plastic (shhhh!) cadians as a delta/zombie team?

There's a scale comparison website who's address escapes me but someone else on the forum will oblige I'm sure.

And I know what you mean about elves!  (did all my high elves and uruk-hai in one hit over a christmas break once, 32 elves and 48 uruks);).

;)
Now water can flow....or water can crash...be water my friend.

Found them! Any european dealers of those Bobby Jackson minis?

Btw. I think his Men@Arms look like the old Advanced Heroquest plastic henchmen (which I have to get out for some S&S action soon, come to think of it....)

Men at Arms are meant to look exactly like the old GW figs. Apparently many people love them  :?:

They have a certain 'ligne claire'-look to them. It may be pure nostalgia, but the style is so instanly recognizable, that I cannot help liking them, too - it brings back lots of fond memories from the days of the rise of the Empire

josef@Obelisk Miniatures makes a set of hoods to.

The homies plastic miniatures can or could be found at Urban Outfitters. I am shure there is one at least in Copenhagen which you could give a call.

Yeah, those Obelisk ones are on my wish list, too.

Funny. Just a couple of months ago I wished for an Obelisk 'dogs-deal' because I could use the dogs but wasn't planning on doing any contemporary/near future gaming... and look at me now!

This forum is a dangerous place  :D

Firstly, thanks a lot lads, you've certainly given me some pretty darn good places to look in terms of bog-standard civilians.

Commander Viper, respect for painting all that in one go...I got sick of them after painting around 15 wood elves...terrible stuff.

I did a bit of research, and after digging around for what seemed like an age, I managed to dig up a pretty awesome conversion that Hoff did over on the Warseer forum. Btw, what is this TAG you speak of? Would you be able to link me?

I realise that the conversions are ridiculously extensive, but hey, I can dream :D

I also managed to find that scale comparison at Wee Toy Soldiers

OMG - that TAG-site has a lot of possibilities for C/NF-gaming!!!

Are they 28 mm like for instance Copplestone FW or Foundry SV?

Glad to have helped matey, those chaos traitors are wicked, but back on topic ;)

I meant that if you used the cadian plastics, maybe a scale weapon swap for something more 21st century rather than 41st, lose the IG symbols on the helmet and carpace armour and you could have a very nice delta/seal team in keeping with your GW zeds (which are on the big side against other companies).

And it's a Y not an I soldier!  ;)
