FIW Terrain
« on: May 18, 2012, 02:18:53 PM »
Looking at building on my terrain needs for FIW. Other than a Blockhouse/Fort, Cabins and erm loads of trees. What are the must haves for a FIW battle table?

Hills, rock outcrops, boulders, fallen logs, rivers, streams, and swamps, and Indian villages?

A small farmstead with all the ancillary buildings/fields etc would be a good thing to fight over.

A cliff on one table edge would quite a good dramatic feel  :)

cheers

Watch "Drums along the Mohawk" for inspiration  :)
"Ho, ho, ho! Well, if it isn't fat stinking billy goat Billy Boy in poison! How art thou, thou globby bottle of cheap, stinking chip oil? Come and get one in the yarbles, if ya have any yarbles, you eunuch jelly thou!"

If you have rivers and a cliff, then you MUST have a waterfall (for Hawkeye to hide behind). Other things you might include for 'flavour' :- Beaver dam; Moss covered fallen trees; Ferns; Bracken and Trails, both 'Blased' and hidden.

Rail fences  :)
Small fields of crops: corn, squash, pumpkins, ubiquitous rows of leafy stuff.

All things I haven't made yet  ::)

I highly recommend Acheson Creations longhouses and Indian palisades...and some scratch-built scalp poles never hurt!

Have a look at my "How to build an Indian longhouse" post, they were cheap to make and quite effective, if I say so myself!!

I have started by making a couples of forests like the one on the Architects of War website. Do you think something like this could pass for a Birch tree forest?

Lazy man :D

Here is the link. I'll try and get pics up tomorrow of what i have done so far. I have done mine with 8mm dowel, drilled holes in mdf and have glued and based so far. Next is the roof with clump foliage and giving the trunks a birch tree look. Not sure if it would look right though but hey ho.
