Hi, as far as i know the italian army didn't use machine guns in battle.
There were very few send in Africa and the crews were not trained.
The army was more confident in the newly developed mountain guns.
Must also consider that a public subscriptions led to fit out battery to be send in Africa (this before Adowa).

Note that the miniature ex strategia & Tattica are now sold by a new italian company.
I don't know if put a link is against the forum rules.
Please let'me know if I can

Regards

Diego

Thank you Diego for your post. I was reading in the Bello book on Italian Colonial Wars 1885/1900 where it mentions machine guns being mounted in forts  etc. You are correct i sayng the mountain gun was their principal support weapon on the field of battle.

Good news on the miniatures being available through another company.

Cheers,

Helen

Hi Helen, I have seen this post only now.

Italian Army has used machine guns at Dogali in 1885, and at another battle of which I don't remember the name now. but in both case were managed by Italian soldiers, and attached to Italian white units.
at Dogali it jammed after the initial firefight.

In the various battles fought against the Dervishes only Askaris infantry and cavalry were used, with mountain guns as well.
probably the MG were a white men affair.
Honestly I have never found something to clarify this aspect.
cheers
Piero

Thanks very much for the replies and links. I've finally picked up the Foundry book on Colonial Armies in Africa which provides some insight into the Italian army including machine guns. I'll make comment once I've completed my reading.

Cheers,

Helen
