Big Trouble in Little China / Hong Kong Action Movies
« on: June 28, 2012, 02:43:46 PM »
Would there be an interest in a range of figures for this kind of Hong Kong action movie genre?

I know there are bits and pieces scattered around a few ranges and companies that could be co-opted, and the Chinatown stuff is quite collectible, but is that enough, or would people be interested in Lo Pans, Three Storms, Chow Yun Fats, martial artists and hopping vampires?

What figures should be included? Personally, I've always wanted a figure of this:

I would love a 28mm Jack Burton. The one in RAFM's USX line just doesn't fo it for me.

Hasslefree does such an excellent Kurt Russle as snake pliskin, I wish they would do Kurt as ole Jack.

Would there be an interest in a range of figures for this kind of Hong Kong action movie genre?

Some possible indicators:

Stone Circle Games made such a range, "China Town" about 10 years back.  It didn't last long, but people are still seeking out the OOP minis.  Dixon launched a Yakuza range about 2 years ago, but have never added to the initial releases, which suggests that it isn't a best seller.

Black Hat Miniatures has a wuxia range.  I don't know how well it sells.  Someone has just released the handful of minis John Jenkins made (including some great hopping vampires, a "jade mummy" and terracotta warriors).  Again, I don't know if those sell, but you could ask.
Back from the dead, almost.

These fit the bill. :)  I'd buy similar things though! Can never really get enough!

Big Trouble In Little China would make for an awesome pulpy range of figures. Lo Pan and his little Beholder-thing in particular :)

Afraid not.  Note my use of the word "someone" - I can't remember who!

I'd think you'd need about 8 packs for a good range, with at least four figures in each pack.  Four packs could be characters, Lo Pan and his sons, Jack and his Friends, Chow Yun Fat in various posses of awesomeness, and maybe a strange creatures pack.  You'd also need about four packs of various extras - extras with guns, extras with knives, extras with assorted martial arts weaponry... If you had those, I'd think you'd have a decent range and could build on it from there if demand called for it.

I did buy a lot of the Black Hat's Tales of the Dragon King range but my wuxia styled house rules just well... sucked honestly. I've been more interested in finding a rule set that fits the style before I purchase more minis for the genre.

That's JJ's site allright, but he doesn't sell hopping vampires anymore. Steve F probably meant someone else.

After a bit of googling about, I think that it may well have been the setting up of JJUK (rather than the Hong Kong based company) that had lodged in my mind.  There was a discussion on the Crooked Dice forum in January in which someone said they had bought the last two packs of jiang shi (hopping vampires), but that JJUK had said that they would be back in stock in February.  But they don't even seem to be on the website now, and the Jade Mummy and Terracotta zombies are both marked as currently unavailable.

Out of stock with James now, you have to go direct to John in the states now, same for the terracotta zombies.

And it was me that bought the last vampires from James at salute Steve! ;) Jade mummy was available Thrusday I recall.

Anyway I would like to see some very good quality chinese sculpts of the following:

evil/good wizards.
martial artists unarmed and weaponed (chinese martial arts, gung fu, wushu, chinese boxing poses not karate and all those usually made up poses)
'clan warriors' distinctive uniforms but in a traidtional style.
victorian/pulp martial artists: oriental figures in period western and eastern garb.
Demons
female martial artists
opium den fiends
civilians.

There think I'm done ;)
