My Warzone - Update #6: Cable Marionettes (Jan. 5 2018)
« on: July 02, 2012, 05:30:05 PM »
Totally inspired by demi_morgana and the terrific topic about Warzone, I just had to start with my Dark Legion. I have most of these guys for more than 10 years and they deserve some paint on them! I started with the Gomorrian Emasculator (yeah, the name is hilarious). I love the sculpt, it oozes character!
I started with my airbrush and basically went nuts with it. The first color was a purplish red, which went to red, which went to yellow. To finish him off, I picked blue for the hands and around the feet. The result is an immensely garish color scheme...on the one hand it puzzled me and on the other I really liked it. So I kept it! I think it fits the weirdness of the Dark Legion.
The guy was real fun to paint and went very fast. I'm already working on my second miniature...a Praetorian Stalker (yes, the name is equally daft :D).

Great work! the skin colors work really well on that beast and the shadin is cool as well. I also like the glowing cold green effect on that sledgehammer detail and the eyes.

And yeah, the Dark Legion names really do sound like Heavy Metal bands :)

Whoa! That thing is cool!

It's amazing what a awesome paintjob does for those old figs.

I've got to say that the sculpt really isn't my thing at all, but I love your paint job. Great blending, highlights and contrasts – top work!  :)

Aye. Fantastic game and great sculpts with loads of character. Don't expect the detail and crispness of Infinity, but more late 90s and early 00's.

Best thing about Dark Legion is most of the monsters remind me of creations by the rockband Gwar ;D

I love the paintjob on this model. Personally I never played Warzone, or any other miniature games older than Warhammer 40.000 4th edition, but I know these old-skool miniatures. They have always appealed to me in some way. I guess it's the comical look they have that radiates fun! Fun in painting and playing; no grim darkness etc. but comical gritiness.

Looking forward to seeing more of these miniatures painted. :)

Great figure ! I like the hammer treatement. Really nice.

I've got hundreds (litteraly) of all metal warzone and chronopia figures waiting to be painting. I'll be on holiday (in fact, unemployement  lol) in a few weeks, I can't wait to put some paint on, motivated by the recent warzone interest.

Chronopia also deserves love. A lot of figures of this range are fantastic.

Number 2 - Dark Legion Praetorian Stalker
In Warzone the Praetorian Stalkers are about the ultimate fighting machines. They are created by Algeroth's forces and are bred in pairs...so not only are they ace shock troopers, they also fight together.
I don't know how old these sculpts are, but I think they're nearing their 20th birthday! So yes, old models, but I love them a lot. They were some of my first Dark Legion purchases, so they were in dire need of a paintjob. Like with the Emasculator, I gave them bright skin colors, starting with P3 Murderous Magenta, highlighting it to P3 Khador Red Base, finally adding Foundry Lemon 1B to the mix to make it yellow. This gives it a similar look to the Emasculator. I kept the hands red, but painted the armour blue to have it return on this model. I also added green accents to tie it in with the Emasculator's colors.
Next up is Praetorian Stalker #2!

Wow! Both those models look fabulous.  :-*

I really appreciate the walk through about how you painted them.  :D

I'd love to see some WIP shots to get a better idea how you achieved such wonderful results.  ;)

Again excellent painting righ there. I always loves the way their armor was painted in the book, and you managed to recreate that and also putting your own spin on it. The various techy bits on the Scythe of Semai are great as usual :)

What more can there be said about a huge cybernetic monstrosity with inch-thick armor, servo-enhanced muscles, a massive Light MachineGun-Flamethrower-3-foot-"Bayonet"... That comes in pairs?!?  :o

File it under chapter XIV, "Things to run away from really fast"....

Good God that's gorgeous!

Feeling the need to run to my basement and dig out some Warzone goodies now. (Also feeling the need to sell them to someone else so they can paint them better then I would.) I love the old style miniatures, but the Mutant Chronicles/Warzone stuff always seemed too chunky to me. That was in the past. Now I see what wonderful things you can do with that chunky style and it warms my heart.

Top notch stuff.

And number three is done...the second Praetorian Stalker. Basically the same paintjob as number 1, but nice to paint nonetheless. I don't know which sculpt I like more. Good thing they come in pairs ;)

And here are some WIP shots of the skin:

First layer with P3 Murderous Magenta

With the second layer I took Khador Red Base and layered it in several layers over the Magenta to get a nice blend.

And with the final stage I took Foundry Lemon 1B, first mixed it with the Khador Red Base for an orange tone and finally I highlighted it with yellow.

The result is the bright skin with a nice purplish tint to it.
