How To: Sourcing Mechanical Spider Legs
« on: July 05, 2012, 06:31:11 AM »
Hello all,

I have a project in mind that hit me all of a sudden the other day. I am in need of thoughts on mechanical spider legs for you guessed it, a mechanical spider. :-) Whether they be scratchbuilt, kitbashed, conversions, bought from a source or what not. I know i may seem some suggestions that i know already but just assume i dont know any product from any companies. And if the thought goes to kitbashing and scratchbuilding and that route just dont mention the base product. Thoughts on how to utilize that project would be most helpful. An example would be...."use tubing or rod be it plastic of metal."

Scale as some will ask. Think 28mm in scale. The front section of the spider will be about 2"ish and the back half 3" to 4" give or take. Just rough estimates.

Any thoughts form this amount of crazy thinkers would be most appreciated. I have a few things in mind but i am curious if there are any avenues i am not aware of.

Thanks :-)

Grimm

I guess the most obvious would be the GW defiler & soulgrinder legs, which have all ball socket joints.
Maybe too steampunk for you, but they are really rather good indeed, as they can be made so that they can be reposed... ( so you can make your spider walk, climb  or pick things up on the table.... )

Im sure they have been used many times for Wild Wild West style mechanical spiders, but they may be too large for what you are looking for?

Worth seeing in the flesh though, as as a resource for making 28mm mechanical spiders they are rather fab.....

Malifaux does have some mechanical spiders in their arcanists range, they also have steampunk arachnids and abominations, all spidery themed

Or even better Poundland etc. - they often have odd looking toys or sets that could be plundered for parts.
Things like "not Transformers" etc make for cheap robot pieces.
They often have animals and insects, but I don't usually look for spiders.
I expect there will be a lot of "not Spiderman" products when the new film surfaces.
