This here Plynkes is a real person, but the one that posts on the Speakeasy is a spambot.

We know that. Why do you think no one responds to you there?

Because once I have made a pronouncement, there is nothing more need be said on the subject, that's why.

A friend of mine introduced a field called "website" in his registration formular. He then hid it from view via CSS, so ordinary users cannot see it. But since spambots generally fill in every field available, all that had to be done was filter every registration with a website. Heavenly silence from then on...

A simpler solution is to put a checkbox on the form that needs to be deselected. Spambots can't click form elements

A smart enough script should be able to parse any page and submit a completed form.

If the script is expecting phpbb and a standard form, then any change could bork it up.  Which is good for us stopping evil spambots.

Rich added a shibboleth to the registration on the Speakeasy, and I went from getting thirty to forty messages a day about new registrants named "Xhobeth93" or suchlike to silence, punctuated occasionally by real registrations.

I've gotten an hour a day back from deleting spambot accounts. They could never post anything since I approved everyone, but now I can breeze through that process.

Not if your form processing logic requires the form element to be disabled. I've done it on several sites and don't get any spam.

I also have a form field on some that requires people to add two numbers and submit the answer. Those ultimately need to be changed every few months as spammers find the questions and feed them into their spambots.

Is the Prof allowing Venusians into the LAF now?  :?

I could add a quote from Blazing Saddles here, but it is probably too un-PC in today's climate
