You have no idea...

I'd say 2 out of 3 users who register here every day are spambots. But we'll never give up the fight ;)

To paraphrase "Ghost in the Shell", can any of us be sure we're not spambots, really? :)

I don't know the technical term, but my e-mail address has been hi-jacked in the past to send spam. I've even apparently sent spam to myself & had to relegate my e-mail address to the "blocked" list :x

At least you've never been reported to the police because some bastard got into your account and used it to send highly offensive e-mails to other people. It's not a pleasant experience.

We've introduced a system at sweetwater where new users need to answer a specific question during the registration process and got rid of spam bots. Might be worth a try.

A friend of mine introduced a field called "website" in his registration formular. He then hid it from view via CSS, so ordinary users cannot see it. But since spambots generally fill in every field available, all that had to be done was filter every registration with a website. Heavenly silence from then on...

Very crafty.

Only problem there is with browsers that don't render CSS, like screen readers for the blind or text-mode browsers that could be caught out.

Oh, now that's clever as hell.

Rich added a shibboleth to the registration on the Speakeasy, and I went from getting thirty to forty messages a day about new registrants named "Xhobeth93" or suchlike to silence, punctuated occasionally by real registrations.

I added a simple question to my registration page: What color is the sky? (Hint: Blue)

Went from 5 or 6 spammers a day to zero in 4-5 months.
