Tercio de Armada del Mar Oceano
« on: February 17, 2008, 10:38:23 AM »
Does someone knows something About the Spanish marines of the late 17°  begin of 18° Century? How were dressed?

I have these references:
there were some Tercios aboard the ships of the Spanish Navy:

Tercio viejo Armada Mar Oceano coated in blu with red facing
Tercio nuevo Armada Mar Oceano coated in yellow with blu facing
Tercio de Napolitanos viejo de l'Armada coated in grey with yellow facing but in blu with red or white facing for the company serving aboard the Galleys.

I presume ,to paint some Spanish Marines for this period, is right to use one of the 3 Tercios above.

Some suggestion?

Claudio

Thanks Lowtardog.
I read that thread, but I hoped someone could give some more informations(yes maybe it is impossible) about the Tercio's companies aboard of the Spanish ships in the late 17° Century.

I think blu coat with red facing is the more right, but only my opinion.

Claudio.

I would say so too Claudio. I am not sure how they deployed the Marines on baord ship, if like the British they would be in Penny packets from Squad to platoons, Company at the most

I found this site which would back up the Blue with red unifomr. Its in Spanish which I cannot understand but the pictures speak for themselves

Not much help in the following, still: Osprey Campaign 153 - Toulon 1793 reports that 23 ships of the line and eight frigates deployed a battalion of 1194 marines besides a marine artillery battalion. They seem to have deployed en masse under Capt. don Antonio de Estrada. This is of course a few decades after the period of interest.

Lowtardog, those colour plates confirm that the blu coat wit red facing is the more possible.

Many thanks.

Claudio,  I believe that you were right in this first post.  At least I've seen similar information in a booklet and on a CD of color plates.  I'd say pick whichever of these three options pleases you most to paint.  But you can hardly be wrong to pick Armada Viejo.

As a side benefit, some of the Spanish garrison companies in the New World wore blue with red facings, according to the Hinds booklet on the armies of Philip V.  So you could have those troops do double duty...
