If they were to focus on a more broad approach to the setting they are missing out on a huge opportunity for making another of the big honking monsters they seem to like so much these days.

You see, during the first age, BALROGS RODE ON DRAGONS.

Most of the comments poo-poo the list as hokum, there's even 'insider' knowledge

I don't think they'll go too far out from the films, they did rather well with the first lo

I was skimming the posts discrediting the list but could not find anything authorative. That, of course, doesn't mean it is the real McCoy.

Commenting on your second statement I do think GW came up with some rather odd stuff and I don't think it is past them to foray even further into their own imagination and come up with kind dragons and dwarf boar riders.

Most of the original range seemed to be based on research from more than the actual LotR book (can't remember where I read that, but I did  :) ). Some of it is probably from an ambiguous passage that has been over interpreted but as the Perrys are the sculptors for the vast majority (and you can certainly tell the ones that haven't been done by them) I think they would have kept it toned down.

Time will tell  :D
