HELP!- How do you make tyres?

I know it's easy to use toy tyres in the models we make, but there must be a way to make ones!!!

 I'm looking for something specific. I know ramshackle games do something similar to what I need, but I'd just like to know if anybody's made their own? It's easy enough to cut plastic card circles, but then that looks too square!! This is what id like to reproduce...





My plan is, of I can make these, then I'll make the rest of my wee idea for an add-on to one of my other projects.

Probably not the advice you're after but I would laser cut the basic profile including the little dinks and then set it up on a lathe to get the desired curvature.

Never tried one by hand before. I would imagine it would be a bit of a sod

If you look at the thread by Brent from Company B on his build for the master of his 1/56 Bearcat, it has a sort of mini tutorial on tyre making.

Option B might be the old Military Modelling 1978 Annual approach. Find a suitable sized tyre from an existing kit or toy, make a plasticine mould and cast in resin.

Hi Andy,

Not sure what size you're looking for, but Kielcraft (now Knightwing) used to do a range of 1:72 scale trucks. They were all six wheelers with abot 10 or 12 complete tyres and separate hubs in each kit. They are about 9mm diameter if I remeber correctly.

I was thinking of the company B thread too - glad to see you lot are on the ball. Shame about the pictures.

I built the master for this Company B Dodge.  I "reinvented the wheel" so to speak and started with a round ball of green stuff, pressed it flat into a disc shape.  Then I used a series of concave or convex "punches" to form the basic rim shape.  When the putty cured, I made a quick jig (like a crude lathe) where I could turn the wheel on its axis -to scribe rim details and square off the tread surface.  Finally I notched in the tread with a file.  Just one wheel, then multiple casts were made of the single wheel.  The side not visible in this photo has the lug-nut details.

I have seen a thread on here before, I believe it is ones of the ones mentioned above. But I think they used casting after making a single master wheel. I am sure you could find someone to do that for you.

I have a large cup that I got from the Lego store I went to in Orlando and loaded up on them. I think it was like $10 for the cup....think like a huge large soda cup with a lid....yea, I got tons of tires that I planned to use for scenery and scratch building.

Do you have a dremel? Set up correctly they can make reasonable lathes.

I need to get that tire thread archived.  I moved servers, so I have the images.  Just need to re-link them.  Using plastic strip is quite easy, and you can knock out several styles in a day or so.
