Need some help making a choice.
« on: 07 September 2012, 06:35:24 PM »
Well, I am going to slowly move towards buying some Old West buildings and I think the laser cut style is the direction I am going to start with to build up a town quickly to save time. I enjoy scratch building but the lack of time of late is a factor.

That said, I am torn as to what to get...they offer some good packages and I am unsure of what to go with. So, I am going to ask your thoughts.

Adobe style:

Merits: Fewer buildings, easier to build up a town. Cheap to get a small town together with a good theme. Easy to paint.

Flaws: Fewer buildings, less variety. Less variety to paint, very across the board look.

Old West Town Style:

Merits: Tons of building styles, can make a huge town. Could be easy to paint based on techniques used. Variety and different looks.

Flaws: More expensive, buildings cost more so progress building up would be slower. More colors could be slower to paint.

What are your thoughts?

Both?
Something in Texas perhaps so you could mix the two?

The timber ones do look good, and last week I found a laser cut "hang em high" gallows.

Sarissa as well as Battle Flag have Gallows...and I think Gamecraft also...part of me is thinking of doing an order with each company and do a comparison...problem is building the town is slower...but they all have some nice features...

With an Adobe town you could recreate many of the scenes from Blood Meridian....but aside from that bit of awesome an "Old West style" town seems to give you a lot more in the way of options.
I am looking for the following Deadlands minis:  Shotgun Thug, Lost Soul, Cleaners, Railroad Workers & Feral Dead. If you have any of these minis, or if you are one, please send me a PM.

Just a personal opinion but, so far, the laser cut old west buildings I've seen just don't have the right look.  Go for a simpler scratchbuild that you can upgrade later.

I agree with James.

Seems like the sensible option.
Nice and cheap to get you started and then just add the stuff that you like as you go.

Simples!

Why not Mix and Match?!
Yearly painting challenges only show me how useless I am at painting...

It depends entirely on "when" you will be playing games and to a degree where.

All my games are in pre 1846 (mostly pre-Mexican Revolution of 1820) in what would become New Mexico/Chihuahua Mexico area and Pre-mexico California.  Hence few "anglo" buildings.

Both is probably the best option if geography and time are "flexible" in your gaming.

Gracias,

Glenn

I gotta go with both. Youcould have an Old West Town built on a former Mexican Village.
Never tell me the odds.

I personally think you get more mileage out of the old west towns, than the adobe stuff. You can set conflicts from Canada to Mexico and all points in between. Also, you can use some of the stuff to go into the beginning of the 20th century in the rural areas with slight mods.
