My North Pacific Board - UPDATE 19/4 2015 p.10 - Better pics
« on: September 15, 2012, 08:21:05 PM »
It's been about a lifetime and a half since I contributed to this forum with something I created, and not just a comment. So here goes.

I'm about to run a small Pulp-campaign with my old roleplaying buddies. The whole campaign is of course a crazy excuse to put as much into a game as possible. But, one night I got this stupid idea that I should do modules as I believed that it would be suitable to play other skirmishes on, and that it would save space. This all a lie and I will never ever do this again.
However, I managed to buy material for about 100 quid or so. And I did of course manage to start the whole project before I realised that I'd rather stabb myself to death with a plastic knife than do this again.

The board is 2x2 feet.

Anyway, this is how it all started. The very inspiring article by Dr. Mathias planted a seed and I decided to do a dark, old forest with massive trees.
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=41545.msg485435#msg485435
Each tile is 30x30cm (or 1x1 feet if you don't understand common sense) and is based on 3mm thick plastic card sheets I got from a sign factory (and cut for me as well) for a highly descent price.
I started these four in a go, just to make sure that I had any sense of it all fitting together with most variants and such.
However, while I could easily fit loads of stuff on to the modules, gameplay would suffer.

I promised myself not to post anything until I had at least one tile ready, and I managed to finish the last one last sunday. So do enjoy my ramblings and praise my genius so I can continue this slow and hurtfull road to hell.

So here they are.

First of, all the boards put together:

The first finished module, from one side:

And from the other side (defining all logic and thus making it a 2-d board)

The old forest:

And a sad attempt for a close-up shot without rigging at 7.15 in the morning between angry child and dropping of at the haven known as Kindergarden:

I hope to update as much as possible here, and to actually get some sort of rigging available so I can take descent and proper photos in the future.

Cheers!

I really like how you've done those tress in the top picture, and I love the painting on of the huge trees - especially how you've blended them into the groundwork :)

Thanks for the great support, guys!
I had some plans of getting in photographed in the right enviroment using some work related resources and the studio to get it right. But time isn't on my side, especially not now when my daughter has been forced by her mother (well, she wants to as well) to do all girly stuff as horse riding, dancing and you name it as long it requires something pink.

@Red: Cheers! I really panicked at first when I saw my results in the morning after a late night of painting. But, I found a bag of some scatter which I bought a couple of years ago and really disliked. But I mixed the pva glue with brown, flocked and then when dry (and stuff falling of everywhere), I soaked it in browns, greens and some blue. And basically prayed to the higher powers that it wouldn't look like a heroine addicts bowels in the morning.
Here's the product (on EBAY! take note).

The ferns seem to be working all right. Looks good! :)
And now I need to buy another three bags. I swear that I didn't recieve 120 in the last order. I didn't count them though since the thought embarreses me...

What is this project for if you don't mind me asking? :)

First and most a Pulp Campaign that starts in the area around Seattle (indian spirits, canucks and other interesting entry points) that moves down to San Fransisco and of to China.
And for our Strane Aeon games. I'm really looking forward to start the second part with a small farm and all those details, but I have to stop myself.

Thats what I thought you were going to use it for. Totally reminds me of Coast, My Grandparents used to own a house out on the OR coast and spent many summers out there. lots of ferns and old growth forest, Lots of collapsed and fallen trees also.
I was thinking you could also use it for Japanese invasion of the north Coast of North America, Or maybe even a American Civil war 2 game with pacific coast rangers and militia fighting against government forces, Reds, unions, what have you.
Or hell be like my great grandpa and run booze from Canada :P
